his paper examines the literacy practices of young people in the
current multilingual context of Finland. It is part of a larger project
looking into the role of English in the everyday lives of Finnish
teenagers. Theoretically the study draws on Literacy Studies and
discourse analysis, and the methodological approach is ethnographic.
The participants in the study were seven 14–16 years old boys and
girls, with whom sustained contact was kept for 16 months. The
methods include photographs, literacy diaries and discussions based
on these. The findings show that the textual landscape of these young
people is rich and both Finnish and English texts are used as an inte-
gral part of everyday activities. The attitudes towards and the values
related to English and Finnish texts proved, however, to be different
