Generally, to publish a paper in a top IS journal, making a new theory contribution is, so we are told, required. Such a requirement also exists in Design Science Research (DSR) literature. We review a number of claims about the necessity of theory as it applies to DSR. We find these claims wanting. For example, medical research and engineering are both called “design science” in Simon’s(1996) Sciences of the Artificial. However, most articles in the top medical, computer engineering, and network engineering journals do not develop new theories. Unless the proponents of theories, as the primary vehicle of scientific DSR knowledge, can offer a satisfactory argument for why theories are the primary scientific contribution, we do not have to regard ‘theory’ as the primary outcome of good scientific research in DSR. If we are correct, then theory is not valuable in its own right in (applied) science, as theory serves higher purposes.

Research Perspectives : Reconsidering the Role of Research Method Guidelines for Interpretive, Mixed Methods, and Design Science Research
Siponen, Mikko; Soliman, Wael; Holtkamp, Philipp (Association for Information Systems, 2021)Information systems (IS) scholars have proposed guidelines for interpretive, mixed methods, and design science research in IS. Because many of these guidelines are also suggested for evaluating what good or rigorous research ... -
Grand theories or design guidelines? : Perspectives on the role of theory in computing education research
Tedre, Matti; Pajunen, John (Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), 2023)A rich body of empirically grounded results and a solid theory base have often been viewed as signs of a mature discipline. Many disciplines have frequently debated what they should accept as legitimate kinds of theories, ... -
Closed Theories, Falsificationism and Non-Cumulative Progress
Firsova, Svitlana; Bilorus, Tetiana; Aksom, Herman (Vilnius University Press, 2020)It is argued that scientific progress occurs not with the cumulative growth of knowledge or when theories get closer to the truth but with discovering new domains and new theories that fit these domains. This horizontal ... -
Developing mixed methods research in sport and exercise psychology : potential contributions of a critical realist perspective
Ryba, Tatiana V.; Wiltshire, Gareth; North, Julian; Ronkainen, Noora J. (Taylor & Francis, 2022)Notwithstanding diverse opinions and debates about mixing methods, mixed methods research (MMR) is increasingly being used in sport and exercise psychology. In this paper, we describe MMR trends within leading sport and ... -
