Teoreettista perustaa tarkastellaan case-tutkimuksen yhteydessä globaalissa suuressa teknologiayhtiössä, jossa tutkimus havainnoi, minkälaisia vaikutuksia master datan hallinnan käyttöönotolla on tietämyksenhallintaan.

This master’s thesis studies how the introduction of master data management and MDM policies affect knowledge management and its various processes in an organization. It builds a theoretical foundation on the notions of knowledge management and master data management based on existing research literature. The theoretical basis is then examined in the context of a case study in a global large-scale technology enterprise where the research observes and discovers what implications the introduction of master data management has in terms of knowledge management. The major findings of the case study are that the introduction of master data management enables a formal and impersonal channel for mostly explicit knowledge flows between different knowledge units. Moreover, a master data domain provides a meta-memory for the avail-ability and location of further tacit knowledge. Both of the findings suggest that master data management can significantly reduce the cost of communicating knowledge in an organization by shifting burden from individuals to a master data domain, which contributes to an organization’s efficiency.
