LPSC has developed the PHOENIX electron cyclotron resonance Charge Breeder since 2000. The performances have been improved over time acting on the 1+ and N+ beam optics, the base vacuum and the 1+ beam injection. A new objective is to update the booster design to enhance high charge state production and 1+ N+ efficiencies, reduce the co-extracted background beam and improve the ion source tunability. The first step, consisting in increasing the peak magnetic field at injection from 1.2 T to 1.6 T was implemented and significant improvement in 1+N+ efficiencies are reported: 12.9% of 23Na8+, 24.2% of 40Ar8+, 13.3% of 132Xe26+ and 13% of 133Cs26+. The next steps of the upgrade are presented: modification of the axial magnetic structure, significant increase of the plasma chamber radius (72 to 90 mm), plasma heating at 18 GHz (instead of 14 GHz), reduction of chemical elements composing the plasma chamber wall and the surrounding beam line.

Neben, Derek; Tarvainen, Olli; Kronholm, Risto; Koivisto, Hannu; Kalvas, Taneli; Machicoane, Guillaume; Leitner, Daniela (AIP Publishing, 2018)This paper reports the effects of sinusoidal microwave power Amplitude Modulation (AM) on the performance of Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion sources. The study was conducted on the 14 GHz ECR ion source ECR2 at the ... -
Influence of axial mirror ratios on the kinetic instability threshold in electron cyclotron resonance ion source plasma
Toivanen, V.; Bhaskar, B. S.; Koivisto, H.; Maunoury, L.; Tarvainen, O.; Thuillier, T. (American Institute of Physics, 2022)Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion source plasmas are prone to kinetic instabilities. The onset of the instabilities manifests as emission of microwaves, bursts of electrons expelled from the plasma volume, and the ... -
Charge breeding time investigations of electron cyclotron resonance charge breeders
Angot, Julien; Tarvainen, Olli; Thuillier, Thomas; Baylac, Maud; Lamy, Thierry; Sole, Patrick; Jacob, Josua (American Physical Society, 2018)To qualify electron cyclotron resonance charge breeders, the method that is traditionally used to evaluate the charge breeding time consists in generating a rising edge of the injected beam current and measuring the time ... -
The effects of electron energy distribution and ionization cross section uncertainty on charge breeder ion source diagnostics with pulsed 1+ injection
Luntinen, M.; Angot, J.; Koivisto, H.; Tarvainen, O.; Thuillier, T.; Toivanen, V. (AIP Publishing, 2023)The consecutive transients (CT) method is a plasma diagnostic technique of charge breeder electron cyclotron resonance ion source plasmas. It is based on the short-pulse injection of singly charged ions and the measurement ... -
Diagnostics of a charge breeder electron cyclotron resonance ion source helium plasma with the injection of 23 Na 1+ ions
Tarvainen, Olli; Koivisto, Hannu; Galatà, A.; Angot, J.; Lamy, T.; Thuillier, T.; Delahaye, P.; Maunoury, L.; Mascali, D.; Neri, L. (American Physical Society, 2016)This work describes the utilization of an injected 23Na1þ ion beam as a diagnostics of the helium plasma of a charge breeder electron cyclotron resonance ion source. The obtained data allows estimating the upper limit ...
