There are lots of batterer group intervention programs, but not much is known about the intervention mechanisms that reduce intimate partner violence. This qualitative study examined the experiences of members of the Jyväskylä's batterer group treatment about the factors that helped them reduce violence. In addition, we examined who began the discussions about these experiences in the group. Our research data consisted of video recordings from Jyväskylä's batterer group treatment. Jyväskylä’s batterer group treatment was created in collaboration with the Psychotherapy Training and Research Centre of the University of Jyväskylä and Crisis centre Mobile for intimately violent persons. We watched recordings for two years. We used qualitative content analysis as the method of analysis. We transcripted those parts from the recordings where the examinees talked about the things that have helped them reduce intimate partner violence. We grouped these points into five categories which were (1) Alternative ways of acting, (2) Changes in attitudes and beliefs, (3) Peer support in the group, (4) Increasing your own well-being and resilience, and (5) Other supportive things. After grouping, we looked at who began the discussions. We found that group members were able to control their sense of anger and behavior through alternative behaviors, such as time-out. In addition, the group members found that expressing their own thoughts and feelings verbally was useful. Group members reported recognising violence, taking responsibility for it, anticipating violent behavior, and changing attitudes to weaknesses and adversities as visible changes in attitudes and beliefs. Peer support made it possible to work together on the problem, get a different perspective on violent behavior, and learn new ways of control oneself. Among other things, the improvement of mental well-being had helped the group members to increase their own well-being. Other external support included various forms of discussion support and medication. Discussions on issues that reduced intimate partner violence began at the initiative of the facilitator or group members, by sharing the experiences of another group member, or by open-ended questions from group members to others. Our results show that both internal and external factors of intervention play a role in reducing intimate partner violence. The importance of the group was highlighted in the form of peer support and in the emergence of relevant themes presented in the results. The research results provide information for group facilitators on what group members benefit from to reduce intimate partner violence....
