Monen suomalaisen kuva Suomen aatelisista pohjautuu J. Alf. Tannerin suomentamaan ja alun perin ruotsalaiseen Kulkurinvalssiin, jossa ylelliset ja suomalaisten arkeen kuulumattomat viini ja samppanja virtaavat kreivien linnoissa. Näkemykseen sisältyy oletus yhtenäisestä yhteiskunnan yläluokasta, jota perinnölliset arvonimet ja kristallikruunujen koristamat salit osaltaan pönkittivät. Ilkka Nummela tarkastelee artikkelissaan, miten yhtenäinen aateli oli taloudellisesti ja miten varakas se oli muihin nähden.
