This chapter deals with the learning analytics technique called student agency analytics and explores its foundational technologies and their potential implications for adaptive teaching and learning. Student agency is vital to consider as it can empower students to take control of their learning, fostering autonomy, meaningful experiences, and improved educational outcomes. Beginning with an overview of the technique, its underlying educational foundations, and analytical approaches, the chapter demonstrates the synergy between computational psychometrics, learning analytics, and educational sciences. Considering adaptive artificial intelligence in the context of adaptive learning and teaching, the chapter underscores the potential of these approaches in education. The chapter serves as a brief guide for educators, researchers, and stakeholders interested in the convergence of AI and education.

Understanding the Study Experiences of Students in Low Agency Profile : Towards a Smart Education Approach
Heilala, Ville; Jääskelä, Päivikki; Kärkkäinen, Tommi; Saarela, Mirka (Springer, 2020)In this paper, we use student agency analytics to examine how university students who assessed to have low agency resources describe their study experiences. Students ( n=292 ) completed the Agency of University Students ... -
Explainable Student Agency Analytics
Saarela, Mirka; Heilala, Ville; Jääskelä, Päivikki; Rantakaulio, Anne; Kärkkäinen, Tommi (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2021)Several studies have shown that complex nonlinear learning analytics (LA) techniques outperform the traditional ones. However, the actual integration of these techniques in automatic LA systems remains rare because they ... -
Student agency analytics : learning analytics as a tool for analysing student agency in higher education
Jääskelä, Päivikki; Heilala, Ville; Kärkkäinen, Tommi; Häkkinen, Päivi (Taylor & Francis, 2021)This paper presents a novel approach and a method of learning analytics to study student agency in higher education. Agency is a concept that holistically depicts important constituents of intentional, purposeful, and ... -
“Sitting at the Stern and Holding the Rudder” : Teachers’ Reflections on Action in Higher Education Based on Student Agency Analytics
Heilala, Ville; Jääskelä, Päivikki; Saarela, Mirka; Kuula, Anna-Stina; Eskola, Anne; Kärkkäinen, Tommi (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022)Digital technologies in teaching and learning in higher education have the potential to enhance student agency. Student agency is an essential resource to nurture, especially at times when students face challenges emerging ... -
“It gave me so much faith in myself” : University Students' Experiences of Agency in Summative Teacher-centered Assessment Feedback Practices in Higher education
Maunumäki, Minna; Maunula, Minna; Harju-Luukkainen, Heidi (International Journal of Multidisciplinary Perspectives in Higher Education, 2023)Strengthening the agency of higher education students is one of the key objectives of higher education. Research has shown that the agency of higher education students can be significantly strengthened through different ...
