The consecutive transients (CT) method is a plasma diagnostic technique of charge breeder electron cyclotron resonance ion source plasmas. It is based on the short-pulse injection of singly charged ions and the measurement of the resulting transients of the extracted multi-charged ion beams. Here, we study the origin of the large uncertainty bounds yielded by the method to reveal avenues to improve its accuracy. We investigate effects of the assumed electron energy distribution (EED) and the uncertainty inherited from the ionization cross section data of K4+ – K12+ ions on the resulting plasma electron density ne, average energy ⟨Ee⟩, and the characteristic times of ion confinement τq, electron impact ionization τqinz, and charge exchange τqcx provided by the CT method. The role of the EED was probed with Kappa and double-Maxwellian distributions, the latter resulting in a shift of the ne and ⟨Ee⟩ distributions. The uncertainty of the ionization cross section σinzq→q+1 was artificially curtailed to investigate its impact on values and uncertainties of the plasma parameters. It is demonstrated that the hypothetical perfect knowledge of σinzq→q+1 significantly reduces the uncertainties of τq, τqinz, and τqcx, which motivates the need for improved cross section data.

Diagnostics of a charge breeder electron cyclotron resonance ion source helium plasma with the injection of 23 Na 1+ ions
Tarvainen, Olli; Koivisto, Hannu; Galatà, A.; Angot, J.; Lamy, T.; Thuillier, T.; Delahaye, P.; Maunoury, L.; Mascali, D.; Neri, L. (American Physical Society, 2016)This work describes the utilization of an injected 23Na1þ ion beam as a diagnostics of the helium plasma of a charge breeder electron cyclotron resonance ion source. The obtained data allows estimating the upper limit ... -
Characteristic Kα emission of electron cyclotron resonance ion source plasmas
Sakieldien, Moenir (University of Jyväskylä, 2018)This thesis presents the results of an investigation of the volumetric Kα emission rate/inner shell ionization rate from an Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (ECRIS) plasma tuned predominantly for high charge state ... -
Measurement of ionization, charge exchange and ion confinement times in charge breeder ECR ion sources with short pulse 1+ injection of metal ions
Luntinen, Miha; Angot, Julien; Tarvainen, Olli; Toivanen, Ville; Thuillier, Thomas; Koivisto, Hannu (IOP Publishing, 2022)The Consecutive Transients (CT) method is used for estimating the characteristic times of ionization, charge exchange and confinement within the plasma of a Charge Breeder Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (CB-ECRIS). ... -
Observation of Poincaré-Andronov-Hopf Bifurcation in Cyclotron Maser Emission from a Magnetic Plasma Trap
Shalashov, A. G.; Gospodchikov, E. D.; Izotov, I. V.; Mansfeld, D. A.; Skalyga, V. A.; Tarvainen, Olli (American Physical Society, 2018)We report the first experimental evidence of a controlled transition from the generation of periodic bursts of electromagnetic radiation into the continuous-wave regime of a cyclotron maser formed in magnetically confined ... -
Influence of axial mirror ratios on the kinetic instability threshold in electron cyclotron resonance ion source plasma
Toivanen, V.; Bhaskar, B. S.; Koivisto, H.; Maunoury, L.; Tarvainen, O.; Thuillier, T. (American Institute of Physics, 2022)Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion source plasmas are prone to kinetic instabilities. The onset of the instabilities manifests as emission of microwaves, bursts of electrons expelled from the plasma volume, and the ...
