The ACCESS (Array of Cryogenic Calorimeters to Evaluate Spectral Shapes) project aims to establish a novel technique to perform precision measurements of forbidden β-decays, which can serve as an important benchmark for nuclear physics calculations and represent a significant background in astroparticle physics experiments. ACCESS will operate a pilot array of cryogenic calorimeters based on natural and doped crystals containing β-emitting radionuclides. In this way, natural (e.g. 113Cd and 115In) and synthetic isotopes (e.g. 99Tc) will be simultaneously measured with a common experimental technique. The array will also include further crystals optimised to disentangle the different background sources, thus reducing the systematic uncertainty. In this paper, we give an overview of the ACCESS research program, discussing a detector design study and promising results of 115In.

Mesonic enhancement of the weak axial charge and its effect on the half-lives and spectral shapes of first-forbidden J+↔J− decays
Kostensalo, Joel; Suhonen, Jouni (Elsevier B.V., 2018)The effects of the enhancement of the axial-charge matrix element γ5 were studied in medium heavy and heavy nuclei for first-forbidden J+ ↔ J− decay transitions using the nuclear shell model. Noticeable dependence on the ... -
Mass measurements of neutron-deficient nuclei and their implications for astrophysics
Kankainen, Anu; Novikov, Yuri; Schatz, H.; Weber, Christine (Springer, 2012)During the years 2005-2010 the double-Penning-trap mass spectrometer JYFLTRAP has been used to measure the masses of 90 ground and 8 isomeric states of neutron-deficient nuclides with a typical precision of better than ... -
First-forbidden transitions in reactor antineutrino spectra
Hayen, L.; Kostensalo, Joel; Severijns, N.; Suhonen, Jouni (American Physical Society, 2019)We study the dominant forbidden transitions in the antineutrino spectra of the fission actinides from 4 MeV onward using the nuclear shell model. Through explicit calculation of the shape factor, we show the expected changes ... -
First-forbidden transitions in the reactor anomaly
Hayen, L.; Kostensalo, J.; Severijns, N.; Suhonen, J. (American Physical Society, 2019)We describe here microscopic calculations performed on the dominant forbidden transitions in reactor antineutrino spectra above 4 MeV using the nuclear shell model. By taking into account Coulomb corrections in the most ...
