According to educational statistics studying foreign languages has significantly decreased in Finnish schools since the mid-1990s. The aim of this article is to find out the reasons behind the lost interest in language studies and the reduced language choices of students at the upper level of comprehensive school. The article will first describe the current situation of language studies in Finnish basic education, and then explore the diverse factors affecting the teaching and studying of languages at schools. Secondly, students’ actual reasons behind their choices of both compulsory and optional languages will be analyzed with the help of data that was gathered with a large-scale e-questionnaire and analyzed statistically. The sample in the study was over 1 200 answers from ninth-graders at the upper level of comprehensive school. The results show that there are differences in the reasons why students choose to study compulsory and optional languages.
