Value co-creation through involving users in
service processes via resource integration is a focal
service research interest. However, studies often take
a firm-centric or generic approach and overlook value
co-creation from the point view of an individual user.
We address this gap by adopting a qualitative
research approach and laddering interviews (n = 113)
to examine users’ hedonic and utilitarian drivers for
value co-creation behavior in five service system
contexts. We argue that underlying differences exist
among all service systems and contribute with a novel
approach by depicting the differences in value-based
motivations for users to co-create value. As practical
implications, our findings suggest services should be
designed according to users’ value drivers rather than
system types. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the
consumer information systems (CIS) framework can
be used to benchmark users’ value co-creation
behavior with specific service systems or to compare
such behavior between different service systems.

Impact of value co-creation and co-destruction for digital consumer services : a case study on activity tracking solutions
Raatikainen, Pasi (2018)Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastellaan nykyistä markkinoiden tilannetta, jossa digitaalisen palvelut ovat muodostuneet merkittäväksi, ja merkitykseltään yhä kasvavaksi tuoteryhmäksi. Uusia digitaalisia sovelluksia, jotka hyödyntävät ... -
Information Technology–Supported value Co-Creation and Co-Destruction via social interaction and resource integration in service systems
Li, Mengcheng; Tuunanen, Tuure (Elsevier BV, 2022)The paper develops a conceptual framework to study the constructs of information technology (IT)-supported value co-creation and co-destruction through shared processes of social interaction and resource integration as ... -
Value co-creation for smart villages : the institutionalization of regional service ecosystems
Lumivalo, Juuli; Päivärinta, Tero; Tuunanen, Tuure (Edward Elgar Publishing, 2023)Building a versatile portfolio of public and private digital-enabled services is vital in rural and sparsely populated regions, where traditional market mechanisms alone cannot guarantee the availability of essential ... -
Is it all about consumer engagement? : Explaining continuance intention for utilitarian and hedonic service consumption
Hepola, Janne; Leppäniemi, Matti; Karjaluoto, Heikki (Elsevier BV, 2020)This paper compares the explanatory power of consumer engagement (CE) regarding service continuance intention with the variables of attitude (utilitarian and hedonic) and satisfaction. Survey data were collected from users ... -
Micro-Level Mechanisms to Support Value Co-Creation for Design of Digital Services
Tuunanen, Tuure; Lumivalo, Juuli; Vartiainen, Tero; Zhang, Yixin; Myers, Michael D. (SAGE Publications, 2023)This study identifies micro-level value co-creation mechanisms that support the design of digital services. As services are now becoming digital—or at least digitally enabled—how to design digital services that enable value ...
