Arm swing has been shown to lead to greater maximal speed and movement economy in cross
-country skiing.
The current study aimed to investigate how arm swing alters skiing mechanics and contributes to performance
and acceleration of the athlete’s centre of mass (COM). While skiing on snow seven highly skilled cross
-country
skiers simulated V2
-alternate skating without using ski poles and with double or single arm swing and without
arm swing
. During leg push
-off the linear momentum of the body increased due to arm swing. Simultaneously,
linear momentum of the arm(s) decreased in arm swing trials, indicating a transfer of momentum from arms to
the rest of the body and being more prevalent with double arm swing compared to single arm swing (all
P <
0.05). Greater maximal skiing speeds were reached with single and double arm swing, while the forward lean
angle, the force leading to acceleration of COM in skiing direction and the force effectiveness increased (all
P < 0.05). The effects of less mass moving in single arm swing could be compensated by carrying out the arm swing faster, almost aligned in skiing direction and with a “long arm” pattern, indicating how arm swing can be
conducted efficiently.

Carbohydrate intake in young female cross-country skiers is lower than recommended and affects competition performance
Kettunen, Oona; Mikkonen, Ritva; Mursu, Jaakko; Linnamo, Vesa; Ihalainen, Johanna K. (Frontiers Media SA, 2023)Purpose: (1) To evaluate if energy availability (EA), macronutrient intake and body composition change over four training periods in young, highly trained, female cross-country skiers, and (2) to clarify if EA, macronutrient ... -
Simulated skiing as a measurement tool for performance in cross-country sit-skiing
Rosso, Valeria; Linnamo, Vesa; Rapp, Walter; Lindinger, Stefan; Karczewska-Lindinger, Magdalena; Vanlandewijck, Yves; Gastaldi, Laura (Sage Publications Ltd., 2019)The International Paralympic Committee mandates the development of an evidence-based classification system, which requires a measure of performance. Performance in cross-country sit-skiing is mainly dependent on force ... -
Physical performance, heart rate variability and hormone concentrations in cross-country skiers throughout the season
Lajunen, Kimmo (2016)Cross-country skiing is an extremely demanding and versatile competitive sport. Fairly little is known about changes in basal hormonal concentrations and function of the autonomic nervous system throughout the season. ... -
Estimating the mechanical cost of transport in human walking with a simple kinematic data-driven mechanical model
Katwal, Parvat; Jaiswal, Suraj; Jiang, Dezhi; Pyrhönen, Lauri; Tuomisto, Jenni; Rantalainen, Timo; Schwab, Arend L.; Mikkola, Aki (Public Library of Science, 2024)This work utilizes a simplified, streamlined approach to study the mechanical cost of transport in human walking. Utilizing the kinematic motion data of the center of mass, velocities and accelerations are determined using ... -
Analysing effectiveness of force application in ski skating using force and motion capture data : a model to support cross-country skiing research and coaching
