Viral infections are amongst the most common diseases affecting people worldwide. New viruses emerge all the time and presently we have limited number of vaccines and only few antivirals to combat viral diseases. Fungi represent a vast source of bioactive molecules, which could potentially be used as antivirals in the future. Here, we have summarized the current knowledge of fungi as producers of antiviral compounds and discuss their potential applications. In particular, we have investigated how the antiviral action has been assessed and what is known about the molecular mechanisms and actual targets. Furthermore, we highlight the importance of accurate fungal species identification on antiviral and other natural products studies.

Idiosyncratic responses to simulated herbivory by root fungal symbionts in a subarctic meadow
Kytöviita, Minna-Maarit; Olofsson, Johan (Taylor & Francis, 2021)Plant-associated fungi have elementary roles in ecosystem productivity. There is little information on the interactions between arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal symbiosis, fine endophytic (FE) and dark septate endophytic ... -
Deciphering the antiviral mechanism of endophyte extract against coxsackieviruses B3 and A9
Antiviraalisia lääkkeitä on kehitettävä ... -
Fungal spore diversity reflects substrate-specific deposition challenges
Calhim, Sara; Halme, Panu; Petersen, Jens H.; Læssøe, Thomas; Bässler, Claus; Heilmann-Clausen, Jacob (Nature Publishing Group, 2018)Sexual spores are important for the dispersal and population dynamics of fungi. They show remarkable morphological diversity, but the underlying forces driving spore evolution are poorly known. We investigated whether ... -
Causal complexity of new product development processes : a mechanism-based approach
Sihvonen, Antti; Pajunen, Kalle (Routledge, 2019)The outcomes of new product development (NPD) processes are dependent on the interplay of several interdependent activities. One product development activity can be dependent on the presence or absence of other activities, ... -
Potential for managing life history diversity in a commercially exploited intermediate predator, the goldsinny wrasse (Ctenolabrus rupestris)
Olsen, Esben Moland; Halvorsen, Kim Tallaksen; Larsen, Torkel; Kuparinen, Anna (Oxford University Press, 2019)Small-bodied wrasse species are important for structuring coastal marine ecosystems but are also increasingly harvested as parasite cleaners on farmed salmon. Identifying management regulations that will support long-term ...
