Resorcinarene bis-thiacrown hosts 1–3 were prepared and crystallized with silver trifluoroacetate yielding one and two
dimensional Ag coordination polymers. The complexation of silver in exo-cavity fashion folds the thiacrown bridges
inwards transforming the resorcinarene hosts into inverted molecular cups. The silver cations were coordinated to the
resorcinarene ligands and trifluoroacetate anions, which act as monodentate or bidendate bridging ligands between the
metal ions. Argentophilic Ag···Ag (2.93–3.38 Å) interactions supported by two bridging carboxylate anions were found in
two of the structures, whereas longer Ag···Ag distances were observed if only one anion connected the silver cations. Both
the anion and the resorcinarene lower rim alkyl chain had a role in the crystal packing, as indicated by the different metal
coordination and packing tendencies of C-ethyl and C-pentyl bis-thiacrowns. A typical packing motif observed was a
polymer chain with end-to-end joints and two Ag ions with tetrahedral coordination geometries. Solvent channels or
discrete solvent pockets between the polymer layers were observed in all structures.

Synthesis, X-ray Structure of Two Hexa-Coordinated Ni(II) Complexes with s-Triazine Hydrazine Schiff Base Ligand
Fathalla, Eman M.; Abu-Youssef, Morsy A. M.; Sharaf, Mona M.; El-Faham, Ayman; Barakat, Assem; Haukka, Matti; Soliman, Saied M. (MDPI AG, 2023)The hydrazine s-triazine ligand (E)-4,4’-(6-(2-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene)hydrazinyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diyl)dimorpholine (DMPT) was used to synthesize two new Ni(II) complexes via a self-assembly technique. The two ... -
The “nitrogen effect” : Complexation with macrocycles potentiates fused heterocycles to form halogen bonds in competitive solvents
Twum, Kwaku; Nadimi, Sanaz; Osei, Frank Boateng; Puttreddy, Rakesh; Ojong, Yvonne Bessem; Hayward, John J.; Rissanen, Kari; Trant, John F.; Beyeh, Ngong Kodiah (Wiley-VCH Verlag, 2023)Weak intermolecular forces are typically very difficult to observe in highly competitive polar protic solvents as they are overwhelmed by the quantity of competing solvent. This is even more challenging for three-component ... -
Encapsulation of xenon by bridged resorcinarene cages with high 129Xe NMR chemical shift and efficient exchange dynamics

Here, we introduce a class of potential biosensor cage structures ... -
High-affinity and selective detection of pyrophosphate in water by a resorcinarene salt receptor
Beyeh, Ngong Kodiah; Díez, Isabel; Taimoory, S. Maryamdokht; Meister, Daniel; Feig, Andrew I.; Trant, John F.; Ras, Robin H. A.; Rissanen, Kari (Royal Society of Chemistry, 2018)Pyrophosphate (PPi) is a byproduct of DNA and RNA synthesis, and abnormal levels are indicative of disease. We report the high-affinity binding of PPi in water by N-alkyl ammonium resorcinarene chloride receptors. Experimental ... -
Multivalent N-donor ligands for the construction of coordination polymers and coordination polymer gels
Tatikonda, Rajendhraprasad (University of Jyväskylä, 2018)This work describes the synthesis and characterisation of several multivalent N-donor ligands and their coordination compounds and the use of these ligands in the construction of coordination polymers and coordination ...
