Neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay of nuclei is a process that requires the
neutrino to be a massive Majorana particle and thus cannot proceed in the standard model of
electro-weak interactions. Recent results of the neutrino-oscillation experiments have produced
accurate information on the mixing of neutrinos and their squared mass differences. The
0νββ decay takes place in atomic nuclei where it can be observed, at least in principle, by
underground neutrino experiments. The information about the weak-interaction observables,
like the neutrino mass, has to be filtered from the data through the nuclear matrix elements
(NMEs). In this article recent work of the Jyv¨askyl¨a group on the NMEs related to double
beta decays is reviewed. This work concerns (1) the relevance to neutrinoless double beta decay
of occupancies of single-particle orbitals close to the Fermi surface and (2) an example of the
resonant neutrinoless double electron-capture decay of an atomic nucleus.

Muon-electron lepton-flavor-violating transitions : Shell-model calculations of transitions in 27Al
Kostensalo, Joel; Suhonen, Jouni; Civitarese, O. (American Physical Society, 2018)In this paper we present the results of large-scale shell-model calculations of muon-to-electron lepton-flavorviolating transitions for the case of the target nucleus 27Al. We extend the previous shell-model calculations, done ... -
Analysis of light neutrino exchange and short-range mechanisms in 0νββ decay
Deppisch, Frank F.; Graf, Lukas; Iachello, Francesco; Kotila, Jenni (American Physical Society (APS), 2020)Neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) is a crucial test for lepton number violation. Observation of this process would have fundamental implications for neutrino physics, theories beyond the Standard Model and cosmology. ... -
Theoretical predictions of wimp-nucleus and neutrino-nucleus scattering in context of dark matter direct detection
Pirinen, Pekka (University of Jyväskylä, 2018)The nature of dark matter is at present an open question. Assuming the main component of dark matter consists of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), directly detecting such particle via a scattering process ... -
First-forbidden transitions in the reactor anomaly
Hayen, L.; Kostensalo, J.; Severijns, N.; Suhonen, J. (American Physical Society, 2019)We describe here microscopic calculations performed on the dominant forbidden transitions in reactor antineutrino spectra above 4 MeV using the nuclear shell model. By taking into account Coulomb corrections in the most ... -
Calculated solar-neutrino capture rate for a radiochemical 205Tl-based solar-neutrino detector
Kostensalo, Joel; Suhonen, Jouni; Zuber, K. (American Physical Society, 2020)Radiochemical experiments for low-energy solar-neutrino detection have been making headlines by exploiting the isotopes 37Cl and 71Ga. Such a very low-threshold measurement of this type can also be performed using 205Tl, ...
