Background Micronutrients are potentially important determinants of adult outcomes such as educational attainment. Copper and zinc have known effects on several medical conditions and cognitive development. Elevated copper and depressed zinc is a common trace metal imbalance.
Methods We estimate the correlation between the copper/zinc ratio (Cu/Zn) in childhood (year 1980) and educational attainment in adulthood (year 2010). We use the Young Finns Study (YFS) combined with the Finnish Linked Employer-Employee Data (FLEED). The regression models account for confounders such as other biomarkers and parental observables.
Results We report a sizeable, negative correlation between Cu/Zn and educational attainment as measured by education in years, grades as well as the likelihood of completing university education. For example, a one standard deviation increase in Cu/Zn decreases the probability of university education by ∼4%.
Conclusions The findings are consistent with a Cu/Zn effect influencing cognitive functioning early in life. Future research should explore more deeply the precise mechanisms by which Cu/Zn affects educational attainment.

Superconvergence phenomenon in the finite element method arising from averaging gradients
Křižek, Michal; Neittaanmäki, Pekka (Springer, 1984)We study a superconvergence phenomenon which can be obtained when solving a 2nd order elliptic problem by the usual linear elements. The averaged gradient is a piecewise linear continuous vector field, the value of which ... -
Twister Tries: Approximate Hierarchical Agglomerative Clustering for Average Distance in Linear Time
Cochez, Michael; Mou, Hao (Association for Computing Machinery, 2015)Many commonly used data-mining techniques utilized across research fields perform poorly when used for large data sets. Sequential agglomerative hierarchical non-overlapping clustering is one technique for which the ... -
Behavioural and emotional strengths of sociometrically popular, rejected, controversial, neglected, and average children
Rytioja, Marleene; Lappalainen, Kristiina; Savolainen, Hannu (Routledge, 2019)Many behavioural and emotional characteristics are associated with children’s peer relationships. The purpose of this study is to examine behavioural and emotional strengths of sociometrically popular, rejected, controversial, ... -
An extended Benthic Quality Index for assessment of lake profundal macroinvertebrates: addition of indicator taxa by multivariate ordination and weighted averaging
Jyväsjärvi, Jussi; Aroviita, Jukka; Hämäläinen, Heikki (North American Benthological Society, 2014)The chironomid Benthic Quality Index (BQI) is a widely used metric in assessments of lake status. The BQI is based on 7 indicator taxa, which like most profundal fauna, often occur sporadically in low densities. Hence, ...
