The purpose of this study is to tell the story of a renewal in one Finnish private school and to try to find out and understand the way it was done. The research is qualitative and uses grounded theory methodology in constructing a theory from data. Following the grounded theory procedures was developed the theory of renewal introducing seven overlapping points. The points are: acknowledgement of the crisis, innovative problem solving, new resources, new leadership, new operations, new structure, and new culture. The critical stage in the theory is the first stage because it is there that the administrator becomes either the facilitator for the change or resists the change. The appropriate choises by the administrative agent will then lead to the changes needed to adapt to the environment’s pressures.
