Nuorten elämää kahden kulttuurin välissä : Out & About ry

Abstract

Maisterintutkielma käsittelee suomalaistaustaisia 15-vuotiaita nuoria, jotka asuvat Espanjan Aurinkorannikolla ja elävät kahden kulttuurin välissä. Tutkielmassa selvitämme miten suomalaistaustaiset nuoret kokevat integroituneensa Espanjaan sekä miten he kokevat oman kulttuuri-identiteettinsä. Käytämme tutkielmassa integraation käsitteen lisäksi kaksisuuntaisen integraation käsitettä. Tutkielman tarkoituksena on tutkia nuorten integraatiota eli miten suomalaistaustainen nuori sopeutuu uuteen yhteiskuntaan ja kulttuuriin, sekä miten espanjalainen yhteiskunta sopeutuu nuoreen. Tutkielmassamme, kuten sosiologi Lea M. Klarenbeekin mukaan, integraatio käsitetään kaksisuuntaisena prosessina, joka tapahtuu sisäpuolella (insiders) olevien ja ulkopuolella (outsiders) olevien välillä. Integraatio näyttäytyy näin määriteltynä ja tutkimuksessamme yhteiskunnallisena tilanteena, jossa ei ole sosiaalisia rajoja sisäpuolella olevien ja ulkopuolella olevien välillä. Muita tutkimuskäsitteitä tutkielmassamme ovat monikulttuuriset nuoret, identiteetti sekä kulttuuri-identiteetti. Tutkimuksemme on etnografinen tutkimus, jossa haastattelimme, havainnoimme ja pidimme työpajat suomalaisen koulun oppilaille Fuengirolassa 2023- vuoden marras- ja joulukuussa. Työpajojen aiheina olivat nuorten tämänhetkinen elämä Espanjassa sekä unelmat ja haaveet. Ryhmähaastatteluiden kysymykset ja teemat käsittelevät muun muassa kulttuuri-identiteettiä, ystävä-/kaveriporukoita, yhdenvertaisuutta, kotoutumista sekä nuorten toiveita, ideoita ja ajatuksia. Tutkielman tuloksista ilmeni, kuinka kielitaidolla, harrastuksilla, sekä kaverisuhteilla on kaksisuuntaiseen integraatioon edistäviä vaikutuksia. Tuloksissa nousi esille, kuinka haasteita kaksisuuntaiseen integraatioon luovat nuorten kokemat kulttuurierot valtaväestön kanssa sekä Los Pacosin alueen suomalaisyhteisön saama stigma. Tulokset kertovat, että monikulttuuriset nuoret kokevat hämmennystä omasta identiteetistään sekä tulevaisuudestaan. Nuorten mukaan Fuengirolassa olisi tarve monikulttuuriselle nuorisotilalle.

Tutkielmalla on tarkoituksena havainnollistaa ja todeta kaksisuuntaisen integraation tarvetta sekä esittää kehittämisideoita. Saatuja tutkimustuloksia käytetään nuorisoalan yhdistyksemme Out & About ry:n toiminnan tarpeen todentamisessa, sekä toiminnan kehittämisessä.

This Master's thesis is about 15-year-olds youngsters of Finnish origin living in Spain, Costa del Sol and living between two cultures. In the thesis we will explore how young people of Finnish origin feel integrated in Spain and how they perceive their own cultural identity. In addition to the concept of integration, we use the concept of two-way integration. The aim of the thesis is to explore the integration of young people, i.e. how a young person with a Finnish background adapts to a new society and culture, and how Spanish society adapts to the young person. In our thesis, as according to sociologist Lea M. Klarenbeek, integration is conceived as a two-way process between insiders and outsiders. Thus defined, and in our research, integration is seen as a societal situation in which there are no social boundaries between insiders and outsiders. Other research concepts used in our thesis are multicultural youngsters, identity and cultural identity.

We interviewed, observed and held workshops to students from a Finnish school in Fuengirola in November and December 2023. The workshops focused on young people's current life in Spain and their dreams and aspirations. The questions and themes of the group interviews covered topics such as cultural identity, groups of friends, equality, integration and the young people's hopes, ideas and thoughts.

The results of the study showed how language skills, hobbies and friendships have a positive impact on two-way integration. The results showed how challenges to two-way integration are created by the cultural differences experienced by young people with the majority population and the stigma of the Finnish community in the Los Pacos area. The results show that multicultural youth experience confusion about their identity and their future. According to young people, there is a need for a multicultural youth center in Fuengirola.

The aim of the study is to illustrate and identify the need for two-way integration and to propose ideas for development. The results of the study will be used to verify the need for the activities of our youth association Out & About and to develop the activities.
