Behavior is guided by the compatibility of expectations based on past experience and the outcome. In a recent study, Fouragnan and colleagues report that absolute prediction error (PE)-related heart-evoked potentials (HEPs) differ according to the cardiac cycle phase at outcome, and that the magnitude of this effect positively correlates with reward learning in healthy adults.

Cardiac cycle and respiration phase affect responses to the conditioned stimulus in young adults trained in trace eyeblink conditioning
Waselius, Tomi; Xu, Weiyong; Sparre, Julia Isabella; Penttonen, Markku; Nokia, Miriam S. (American Physiological Society, 2022)Rhythms of breathing and heartbeat are linked to each other as well as to rhythms of the brain. Our recent studies suggest that presenting the conditioned stimulus during expiration or during the diastolic phase of the ... -
Activity level in left auditory cortex predicts behavioral performance in inhibition tasks in children
van Bijnen, Sam; Parkkonen, Lauri; Parviainen, Tiina (Elsevier, 2022)Sensory processing during development is important for the emerging cognitive skills underlying goal-directed behavior. Yet, it is not known how auditory processing in children is related to their cognitive functions. Here, ... -
Collaborative cognitive load in new junior team members in agile software development
CA3–CA1 long‐term potentiation occurs regardless of respiration and cardiac cycle phases in urethane‐anesthetized rats
Nokia, Miriam S.; Waselius, Tomi; Penttonen, Markku (Wiley, 2023)Breathing and heartbeat synchronize to each other and to brain function and affect cognition in humans. However, it is not clear how cardiorespiratory rhythms modulate such basic processes as synaptic plasticity thought ... -
The embodiment of emotion-label words and emotion-laden words : Evidence from late Chinese–English bilinguals
Tang, Dong; Fu, Yang; Wang, Huili; Liu, Bo; Zang, Anqi; Kärkkäinen, Tommi (Frontiers Media, 2023)Although increasing studies have confirmed the distinction between emotion-label words (words directly label emotional states) and emotion-laden words (words evoke emotions through connotations), the existing evidence is ...
