Soil carbon monitoring using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy
Monitoring soil carbon can be helpful in understanding how different land-use practices sequestrate carbon from the atmosphere. This is important for climate change mitigation as well as the soil well-being. Soil carbon assessment is currently mostly done using dry combustion methods, which require a lot of sample preparation and a laboratory environment. Therefore these methods are not well suited for monitoring purposes, and novel and fast methods for measuring soil carbon concentrations are needed. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy is able to remove many of the bottlenecks related to other measurement methods. In this work, optimal measurement parameters are determined and calibration of a laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy setup is performed using a set of samples reference measured with dry combustion. Optimal measurement parameters, including laser wavelength, laser energy, spectrometer delay and exposure time were found and two calibration models for two different sets of samples were created based on these parameters.

The Effects of Northern Forage Crop Species on the Soil Carbon Sequestration and Microbial Community Structure
Palvi, Anni (2023)Nurmimaiden maaperän hiilensidonta on oleellinen osa matkalla kohti hiilineutraalia maidontuotantoa. Monivuotiset nurmikasvit kasvattavat maaperän hiilivarastoa sitomalla hiilidioksidia ilmakehästä biomassaansa ja juuristonsa ... -
Time-gated Raman and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy in mapping of eudialyte and catapleiite
Romppanen, Sari; Häkkänen, Heikki; Kekkonen, Jere; Nissinen, Jan; Nissinen, Ilkka; Kostamovaara, Juha; Kaski, Saara (John Wiley & Sons Ltd., 2020)Raman analysis of rock samples containing rare earth elements (REEs) is challenging due to the strong fluorescence, which may mask the weaker Raman signal. In this research, time‐gated (TG) Raman has been applied to the ... -
Singular value decomposition approach to the yttrium occurrence in mineral maps of rare earth element ores using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy
Romppanen, Sari; Häkkänen, Heikki; Kaski, Saara (Pergamon, 2017)Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been used in analysis of rare earth element (REE) ores from the geological formation of Norra Kärr Alkaline Complex in southern Sweden. Yttrium has been detected in eudialyte ... -
Forest bioenergy harvesting changes carbon balance and risks biodiversity in boreal forest landscapes
Repo, Anna; Eyvindson, Kyle J.; Halme, Panu; Mönkkönen, Mikko (Canadian Science Publishing, 2020)Climate solutions relying on forest bioenergy may be in conflict with carbon sequestration and storage by forests as well as conservation of biodiversity. We quantified effects of forest residue harvesting for bioenergy ... -
