Psykoterapia on vuorovaikutuksellinen, teoreettiseen tietämykseen perustuva ja tehokas mielenterveyden häiriöiden ja psyykkisten ongelmien hoito- ja kuntoutusmuoto. Se täyttää näyttöön perustuvan hoidon kriteerit lähes kaikissa tärkeimmissä psykiatrisissa häiriöissä. Ammattinimikkeeseen tähtäävä psykoterapeuttikoulutus siirtyi asetusmuutoksella vuoden 2012 alussa yliopistojen järjestettäväksi. Kelan korvaama harkinnanvarainen psykoterapia muuttui vuoden 2011 alusta lakisääteiseksi kuntoutuspsykoterapiaksi. Psykoterapioiden lisääntynyt käyttö ja kysyntä asettavat hoitojärjestelmät uuden haasteen eteen. Psykoterapioiden saatavuutta tulisi parantaa hoitoon hakeutumista helpottavilla ohjautumisjärjestelmillä. Tarvitaan myös hoidon tuloksellisuuden seurantajärjestelmiä.
