Sexual selection is a field coloured by tension and contrasting views. One contested claim is the causal link from the definition of the sexes (anisogamy) to divergent selection on the sexes. Does theory truly engage with this claim? We survey the extent to which theory makes sex-specific assumptions and engages with anisogamy, and discuss these issues in a broader context. The majority of theory in sexual selection makes sex-specific assumptions and does not engage with the definition of the sexes. While this does not invalidate existing results, debates and criticisms regarding sexual selection force us to think deeper about its logical foundations. We discuss ways to strengthen the foundations of sexual selection theory by relaxing central assumptions.

Sex roles and the evolution of parental care specialization
Henshaw, Jonathan M.; Fromhage, Lutz; Jones, Adam G. (The Royal Society Publishing, 2019)Males and females are defined by the relative size of their gametes (anisogamy), but secondary sexual dimorphism in fertilization, parental investment and mating competition is widespread and often remarkably stable over ... -
Evolutionary importance of intraspecific variation in sex pheromones
De Pasqual, Chiara; Groot, Astrid T.; Mappes, Johanna; Burdfield-Steel, Emily (Elsevier, 2021)Sex pheromones in many insect species are important species-recognition signals that attract conspecifics and inhibit attraction between heterospecifics; therefore, sex pheromones have predominantly been considered to ... -
Maintenance costs of male dominance and sexually antagonistic selection in the wild
Boratynski, Zbigniew; Koskela, Esa; Mappes, Tapio; Mills, Suzanne; Mökkönen, Mikael (Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Ltd., 2018)Variation in dominance status determines male mating and reproductive success, but natural selection for male dominance can be detrimental or antagonistic for female performance, and ultimately their fitness. Attaining and ... -
Female Sexual Signaling in a Capital Breeder, the European Glow-Worm Lampyris noctiluca
Baudry, Gautier; Hopkins, Juhani; Watts, Phillip C.; Kaitala, Arja (Springer, 2021)Theory predicts that because costs constrain female sexual signaling, females are expected to have a low signaling effort that is increased with passing time until mating is secured. This pattern of signaling is expected ... -
First evidence of sex-specific responses to chemical cues in tardigrade mate searching behaviour
Chartrain, Justine; Knott, K. Emily; Michalczyk, Łukasz; Calhim, Sara (The Company of Biologists, 2023)Chemical cues are widely used in intra- and interspecific communication, either as substances deposited in the substrate or as molecules diffused in water or air. Tardigrades are an emerging microscopic study system in ...
