Two-dimensional (2D) topological superconductors (TS) host chiral Majorana modes (MMs) localized at the boundaries. In this work, we study the effect of disorder on the localization length of MMs in two-dimensional spin-orbit (SO) coupled superconductors within quasiclassical approximation. We find nonmonotonic behavior of the Majorana localization length as a function of disorder strength. At weak disorder, the Majorana localization length decreases with an increasing disorder strength. Decreasing the disorder scattering time below a crossover value τc, the Majorana localization length starts to increase. The crossover scattering time depends on the relative magnitudes of the two ingredients behind TS: SO coupling and exchange field. For dominating SO coupling, τc is small, and vice versa for the dominating exchange field.

Reducing the frequency of the Higgs mode in a helical superconductor coupled to an LC circuit
Lu, Yao; Ilić, Stefan; Ojajärvi, Risto; Heikkilä, Tero T.; Bergeret, F. Sebastian (American Physical Society (APS), 2023)We show that the amplitude or Higgs mode of a superconductor with strong spin-orbit coupling and an exchange field, couples linearly to the electromagnetic field. Furthermore, by coupling such a superconductor to an LC ... -
Field dependence of the vortex-core size in dirty two-band superconductors
Vargunin, Artjom; Silaev, Mikhail (American Physical Society, 2019)We study the structure of Abrikosov vortices in two-band superconductors for different external magnetic fields and different parameters of the bands, including the interband scattering rate. The vortex-core size determined ... -

Heikkilä, Tero; Ojajärvi, Risto; Maasilta, Ilari; Strambini, E.; Giazotto, F.; Bergeret, F. S. (American Physical Society, 2018)We suggest an ultrasensitive detector of electromagnetic fields exploiting the giant thermoelectric effect recently found in superconductor-ferromagnet hybrid structures. Compared with other types of superconducting detectors ... -
Nonlinear spin torque, pumping, and cooling in superconductor/ferromagnet systems
Ojajärvi, Risto; Manninen, Juuso; Heikkilä, Tero T.; Virtanen, Pauli (American Physical Society, 2020)We study the effects of the coupling between magnetization dynamics and the electronic degrees of freedom in a heterostructure of a metallic nanomagnet with dynamic magnetization coupled with a superconductor containing a ... -
Directly probing the chirality of Majorana edge states
Lu, Yao; Virtanen, P.; Heikkilä, Tero T. (American Physical Society (APS), 2022)We propose to directly probe the chirality of Majorana edge states in 2D topological superconductors using polarization selective photon absorption. When shining circularly polarized light on a 2D topological superconductor ...
