In the study of complexity, accuracy and fluency (CAF), syntactic complexity can be measured by a multitude of measures. Traditionally, the measures are quantitative and they use production units such as words, clauses, T -units, and sentences. Despite the vast number o f measures available, many studies have used only one or two of them, or parallel ones tapping the same component of complexity. The present study explores syntactic complexity using seven frequently used quantitative complexity measures to gauge different facets of complexity in written learner Finnish. The data of the study consist of texts written by adult and adolescent language learners, and they cover proficiency levels from beginner (A1) to advanced learner (C2) in the Common European Framework of Re ference (CEFR). According to the results, changes in the measures are not linear from one proficiency level to the next. The results also show that while all the selected measures catch some statistically significant differences between proficiency levels in adult language learner texts, only four measures do so in adolescent language learner texts. The results also suggest that the measures are sensitive to task type.

Is the variation in syntactic complexity features observed in argumentative essays produced by B1 level EFL learners in Finland and Pakistan attributable exclusively to their L1?
Khushik, Ghulam Abbas (Elsevier, 2024)This study has explored the syntactic complexity features of English learners at the B1 Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) (CoE, 2001) level from both Pakistan and Finland. The learners in question were taught ... -

Automated content assessment and feedback for Finnish L2 learners in a picture description speaking task
Phan, Nhan; von Zansen, Anna; Kautonen, Maria; Voskoboinik, Ekaterina; Grosz, Tamas; Hilden, Raili; Kurimo, Mikko (International Speech Communication Association, 2024)We propose a framework to address several unsolved challenges in second language (L2) automatic speaking assessment (ASA) and feedback. The challenges include: 1. ASA of visual task completion, 2. automated content grading ... -
Dialogical view on learner agency of immigrant pupils : a case study of the learners of Finnish as L2
Sun, Dukkeum; Ruohotie-Lyhty, Maria Elina (Routledge, 2022)This study explores the dialogical nature of agency when two immigrant pupils, who are learning Finnish as their new target language, are authoring their selves. Bakhtin’s dialogism was the inspiration for this examination ... -
