High-spin states in the N = 128 nucleus 218Th have been investigated following fusion-evaporation reactions, using the recoil-decay tagging technique. Due to the short-lived nature of the ground state of 218Th prompt γ rays have been correlated with the α decay of the daughter nucleus 214Ra. The level scheme representing the decay of excited states has been extended to (16+) with the observation of six previously unreported transitions. The observations are compared with the results of shell model calculations and within the context of the systematics of neighbouring nuclei.

Single Particle Levels and ββ-Decay Matrix Elements in The Interacting Boson Model
Barea, J.; Kotila, Jenni-Mari (IOP Publishing, 2018)Recently a new method to calculate the occupancies of single particle levels in atomic nuclei was developed in the context of the microscopic interacting boson model, in which neutron and proton degrees of freedom are ... -

(American Physical Society, 2019)An analysis technique has been developed in order to mitigate energy summing due to sequential short-lived α decays from nuclei implanted into a silicon detector. Using this technique, α-decay spectroscopy of the N=130 ... -
Ion traps in nuclear physics : recent results and achievements
Eronen, Tommi; Kankainen, Anu; Äystö, Juha (Pergamon, 2016)Ion traps offer a way to determine nuclear binding energies through atomic mass measurements with a high accuracy and they are routinely used to provide isotopically or even isomerically pure beams of short-living ions for ... -
Nuclear physics of non-standard 0νβ β-decay
Kotila, J.; Graf, L.; Deppisch, F. F.; Iachello, F. (American Institute of Physics, 2019)The observation neutrinoless double beta (0νβ β) decay remains crucial for understanding lepton number violation. In view of the difficulties to observe the mass mechanism of 0νβ β-decay, investigations of other mechanisms ...
