Run 3 at the CERN LHC is scheduled to start in March 2021. In preparation
for this new data taking period the ALICE experiment is making major modifications to its subsystems and is introducing three new detectors: the new Inner
Tracking System, the Muon Forward Tracker, and the Fast Interaction Trigger.
The new detectors will enhance tracking, especially at low transverse momenta,
improve vertexing, provide the required triggering, fast timing, luminosity, and
forward multiplicity functionality. For instance, it will be possible to measure
beauty from displaced J/ψ vertices down to transverse momenta pT ∼ 0 and
improve precision for the ψ(2S) measurements. The upgraded ALICE will be
able to register ten-fold increase of Pb-Pb delivered luminosity in Run 3 and
4 as well as two orders of magnitude more minimum bias events at 50 kHz in
Pb-Pb collisions.

Upgrade of ALICE forward detectors
Slupecki, Maciej (Sissa, 2019)ALICE will upgrade its subsystems in 2019−2020 to fully benefit from the increased collision rate and luminosity of the LHC at CERN. Two new forward detectors will be installed at the core of ALICE: the Fast Interaction ... -
ALICE forward rapidity upgrades
Slupecki, Maciej (Sissa, 2018)Two forward rapidity upgrades of the ALICE apparatus at the LHC are presented: the Muon Forward Tracker (MFT) and the Fast Interaction Trigger (FIT). Their designs are driven by physics performance studies, which have ... -
The upgrade of the ALICE TPC with GEMs and continuous readout
ALICE TPC collaboration (Institute of Physics Publishing, 2021)The upgrade of the ALICE TPC will allow the experiment to cope with the high interaction rates foreseen for the forthcoming Run 3 and Run 4 at the CERN LHC. In this article, we describe the design of new readout chambers ... -
Real-time data processing in the ALICE High Level Trigger at the LHC
ALICE Collaboration (Elsevier, 2019)At the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, atomic nuclei are collided at ultra-relativistic energies. Many final-state particles are produced in each collision and their properties are measured by the ... -
Event plane determination with the new ALICE FIT detector
Rytkönen, Heidi Maria (Sissa Medialab, 2021)During the on-going second long shutdown of LHC, the forward detectors of the ALICE experiment are implementing an extensive upgrade. In particular, a new Fast Interaction Trigger (FIT) has been designed and built. It ...
