We describe a method to measure ultrafast protein structural changes using time-resolved wide-angle X-ray scattering at an X-ray free-electron laser. We demonstrated this approach using multiphoton excitation of the Blastochloris viridis photosynthetic reaction center, observing an ultrafast global conformational change that arises within picoseconds and precedes the propagation of heat through the protein. This provides direct structural evidence for a 'protein quake': the hypothesis that proteins rapidly dissipate energy through quake-like structural motions.

Time-resolved measurement of optical emission line profiles from electron cyclotron resonance ion source plasma
Timonen, Oskari; Koivisto, Hannu; Kronholm, Risto; Toivanen, Ville (IOP Publishing, 2024)Optical emission spectroscopy provides a non-invasive method to probe the properties of hot and highly charged magnetically confined plasmas. The optical emission line profiles enable, for example, to identify the different ... -
Rotational coherence imaging and control for CN molecules through time-frequency resolved coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering
Lindgren, Johan; Hulkko, Eero; Pettersson, Mika; Kiljunen, Toni (Americal Institute of Physics, 2011)Numerical wave packet simulations are performed for studying coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) for CN radicals. Electronic coherence is created by femtosecond laser pulses between the X²Σ and B²Σ states. Due to ... -
The role of radio frequency scattering in high-energy electron losses from minimum-B ECR ion source
Izotov, Ivan; Shalashov, Alexander G; Skalyga, Vadim; Gospodchikov, Egor D; Tarvainen, Olli; Mironov, Vladimir; Koivisto, Hannu; Kronholm, Risto; Toivanen, Ville; Subhash Bhasi Bhaskar, Bichu (IOP Publishing, 2021)The measurement of the axially lost electron energy distribution escaping from a minimum-B electron cyclotron resonance ion source in the range of 4--800 keV is reported. The experiments have revealed the existence of a ... -
Highlighting non-covalent interactions to molecular structure, electronic and vibrational spectra in a new hybrid organic–inorganic cobalt complexes : Synthesis, characterization, experimental and computational studies
Makhlouf, Jawher; El Bakri, Youness; Lai, Chin-Hung; Valkonen, Arto; Abuelizz, Hatem A.; Al-Salahi, Rashad; Sta, Wajda Smirani (Elsevier, 2025)The cobalt (II) complexes have been synthesized from the reaction of the cationic entities (1-(2-methoxyphenyl) piperazine and the 1-(4-nitrophenyl) piperazine with metallic salt CoCl2·6H2O, then processing the evaporation ... -
Distinguishing Majorana zero modes from impurity states through time-resolved transport
Tuovinen, Riku; Perfetto, Enrico; van Leeuwen, Robert; Stefanucci, Gianluca; Sentef, Michael A. (Institute of Physics, 2019)We study time-resolved charge transport in a superconducting nanowire using time-dependent Landauer–Büttiker theory. We find that the steady-state Majorana zero-bias conductance peak emerges transiently accompanied by ...
