The wet granulation process was used to prepare new, efficient, and cost-effective granular biomass-based composite catalysts for catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) of bisphenol A (BPA). The most stable composite granules was prepared by mixing biomass-based carbon residue (CR) with metakaolin (MK) combined with calcium oxide (CaO) or cement and a solvent (NaOH or KOH). For all the prepared composite granules, the optimized binding agents to carbon ratio was 0.3, the solvent to carbon ratio 1.2, and the agitation rate 1200 rpm. The specific surface area of the prepared catalysts was 152–205 m2/g. The composite granular catalyst (CR + MK + CaO + NaOH) had the most durable and stable structure (compressive strength of 27 N) and the most basic surface (15 mmol/g) measured with temperature programmed desorption. This catalyst was the most active in CWPO of BPA and total organic carbon removal of 50% and 48%, respectively.

The catalytic wet air oxidation of pharmaceutical wastewater with alkali-activated Mn and Cu composites : preparation of precursors by calcination of kaolin with Mn and Cu
Christophliemk, M. P.; Heponiemi, A.; Kangas, T.; Hu, T.; Prokkola, H.; Lassi, U. (Springer Nature, 2024)In recent decades, the concentration of pharmaceutical residues and narcotics has increased in municipal wastewater. Decomposing these toxic organic chemicals is challenging and requires new techniques and advanced catalytic ... -
Catalytic conversion of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural over biomass-based activated carbon catalyst
Rusanen, Annu; Lahti, Riikka; Lappalainen, Katja; Kärkkäinen, Johanna; Hu, Tao; Romar, Henrik; Lassi, Ulla (Elsevier BV, 2020)Selective and efficient dehydration of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has been widely explored research problem recently, especially from the perspective of more sustainable heterogeneous catalysts. In this study, ... -
Enhancement of the removal of the residual activepharmaceutical ingredients from wastewater : adsorption studies on three common antibiotics
Luukkainen, Jonna (2018)Micropollutants, like pharmaceuticals, are a potential risk to human health and the ecosystems. Pharmaceutical factories are significant local point sources that might release increased pharmaceutical concentrations to the ... -
Carbons from second generation biomass as sustainable supports for catalytic systems
Prati, Laura; Bergna, Davide; Villa, Alberto; Spontoni, Paolo; Bianchi, Claudia L.; Hu, Tao; Romar, Henrik; Lassi, Ulla (Elsevier B.V., 2018)In this study activated carbons were produced from the wood of three different wood species (pine, birch, spruce). The resulting activated carbons were characterized in bulk for ash content, carbon content (elemental ... -
