Apex predators play a key role in ecosystem stability across environments but their numbers in general
are decreasing. By contrast, European catfsh (Silurus glanis), the European freshwater apex predator,
is on the increase. However, studies concerning apex predators in freshwaters are scarce in comparison
to those in terrestrial and marine ecosystems. The present study combines stomach content and stable
isotope analyses with diet preferences of catfsh to reveal its impact on the ecosystem since stocking.
Catfsh niche width is extremely wide in comparison to the typical model predator, Northern pike
(Esox lucius). Catfsh and pike have diferent individual dietary specialization that results in diferent
functional roles in coupling or compartmentalizing distinct food webs. The role of both species in the
ecosystem is irreplaceable due to multiple predator efects. The impact of catfsh is apparent across
the entire aquatic ecosystem, but herbivores are the most afected ecological group. The key feature
of catfsh, and probably a common feature of apex predators in general, is utilization of several dietary
strategies by individuals within a population: long-term generalism or specialization and also shortterm
specialization. Catfsh, similar to other large-bodied apex predators, have two typical features:
enormous generalism and adaptability to new prey sources.

Trophic role of marbled crayfish in a lentic freshwater ecosystem
Lipták, Boris; Veselý, Lukáš; Ercoli, Fabio; Bláha, Martin; Buřič, Miloš; Ruokonen, Timo; Kouba, Antonín (Regional Euro-Asian Biological Invasions Centre, 2019)Species’ introductions may cause severe adverse effects on freshwater ecosystems and their biota. The marbled crayfish, Procambarus virginalis Lyko, 2017, is an invasive parthenogenetically reproducing crayfish with rapid ... -
Return of the Apex Predator : How Brown Trout (Salmo trutta) Re-Establishment Shapes an Ecosystem
Perälä, Tommi; Uusi-Heikkilä, Silva; Kuparinen, Anna (Finnish Zoological and Botanical Publishing Board, 2021)Re-establishment of a declined apex predator fish species in a lake ecosystem may have dramatic effects on other fish and plankton community already inhabiting the ecosystem. We studied mechanistically potential impacts ... -
Pre- and Postnatal Predator Cues Shape Offspring Anti-predatory Behavior Similarly in the Bank Vole
Sievert, Thorbjörn; Bouma, Kerstin; Haapakoski, Marko; Matson, Kevin D.; Ylönen, Hannu (Frontiers Media SA, 2021)Prey animals can assess the risks predators present in different ways. For example, direct cues produced by predators can be used, but also signals produced by prey conspecifics that have engaged in non-lethal predator-prey ... -
Poor nutritional quality of primary producers and zooplankton driven by eutrophication is mitigated at upper trophic levels
Taipale, Sami Johan; Ventelä, Anne‐Mari; Litmanen, Jaakko; Anttila, Lauri (John Wiley & Sons, 2022)Eutrophication and rising water temperature in freshwaters may increase the total production of a lake while simultaneously reducing the nutritional quality of food web components. We evaluated how cyanobacteria blooms, ... -
Fishing triggers trophic cascade in terms of variation, not abundance, in an allometric trophic network model
Uusi-Heikkilä, Silva; Perälä, Tommi; Kuparinen, Anna (Canadian Science Publishing, 2022)Trophic cascade studies often rely on linear food chains instead of complex food webs and are typically measured as biomass averages, not as biomass variation. We study trophic cascades propagating across a complex food ...
