Improving methods in X-ray nanotomography of fibre bonds
X-ray nanotomography has proven to be a useful yet challenging method in the study of cellulose fibre bonds. The challenges encountered in previous researches are related to lengthy imaging times and low success rate per sample. To counter these obstacles, fibre staining in order to enhance contrast in radiographic images and an alternative method for marker particle placement were examined in this study. Cesium iodide proved to be a suitable staining material, and the alternative method for particle placement may increase success rate by reducing microfibril structure fracturing during the marker placement process.

Improved Reactivity and Derivatization of Cellulose after Pre-Hydrolysis with Commercial Enzymes
Willberg-Keyriläinen, Pia; Ropponen, Jarmo; Lahtinen, Manu; Pere, Jaakko (North Carolina State University, 2019)Reactivity is an important parameter when considering the chemical modification or dissolution of cellulose. Different pretreatment methods affect cellulose reactivity by decreasing its degree of polymerization (DP) and ... -
Use of micro-tomography for validation of method to identify interfacial shear strength from tensile tests of short regenerated cellulose fibre composites
Hajlane, A.; Miettinen, Arttu; Madsen, B.; Beauson, J.; Joffe, R. (Institute of Physics Publishing Ltd., 2016)The interfacial shear strength of short regenerated cellulose fibre/polylactide composites was characterized by means of an industry-friendly adhesion test method. The interfacial shear strength was back-calculated from ... -
Cellulose nanofibrils prepared by gentle drying methods reveal the limits of helium ion microscopy imaging
Ketola, Annika E.; Leppänen, Miika; Turpeinen, Tuomas; Papponen, Petri; Strand, Anders; Sundberg, Anna; Arstila, Kai; Retulainen, Elias (Royal Society of Chemistry, 2019)TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TCNFs) have unique properties, which can be utilised in many application fields from printed electronics to packaging. Visual characterisation of TCNFs has been commonly performed using ... -
Improving RF Fingerprinting Methods by Means of D2D Communication Protocol
Khandker, Syed; Torres-Sospedra, Joaquín; Ristaniemi, Tapani (MDPI AG, 2019)Radio Frequency (RF) fingerprinting is widely applied for indoor positioning due to the existing Wi-Fi infrastructure present in most indoor spaces (home, work, leisure, among others) and the widespread usage of smartphones ... -
Improving fault prevention with proactive root cause analysis (PRORCA method)
Mohammadnazar, Hojat (2016)Measures taken to prevent faults from slipping through to operation can secure development of highly reliable software systems. One such measure is analyzing the root causes of reoccurring faults and preventing them from ...
