TilastotiedeAquatic ecosystems are facing a growing number of human-induced stressors and the need to
implement more biomonitoring to assess the ecological status of water bodies is eminent. This dissertation aims at providing tools to reduce the costs and improve the accuracy of freshwater benthic macroinvertebrate biomonitoring. To improve the cost-e ciency, we consider automated classi cation and develop a novel classi er suitable for complex macroinvertebrate image data. To enhance the accuracy of macroinvertebrate biomonitoring, we study the statistical properties of the Percent Model A nity index crucial to current Finnish biomonitoring and the factors a ecting these statistics. Finally, we perform a simulation study to analyze how di erent biological indices are a ected by misclassi cations in automated identi cation of macroinvertebrates.

One of the most used methods to biomonitor water quality is to sample benthic macroinvertebrate communities, in particular to examine the presence and ... -
Statistical methods for adaptive river basin management and monitoring
Kotamäki, Niina (University of Jyväskylä, 2018)Decision-making at different phases of adaptive river basin management planning rely largely on the information that is gained through environmental monitoring. The aim of this thesis was to develop and test statistical ... -
Catastrophic effects of sand mining on macroinvertebrates in a large shallow lake with implications for management
Zou, Wei; Tolonen, Kimmo; Zhu, Guangwei; Qin, Boqiang; Zhang, Yunling; Cao, Zhigang; Kai, Peng; Cai, Yongjiu; Gong, Zhijun (Elsevier, 2019)Sand mining is a human activity that is increasing in inland waters and has profound effects on entire aquatic ecosystems. However, current knowledge of the effects of sand mining on freshwater lake ecosystems remains ... -
Community structure of macroinvertebrates, bryophytes and fish in boreal streams : patterns from local to regional scales, with conservation implications
Paavola, Riku (University of Jyväskylä, 2003)Voitaisiinko luonnonsuojelualueiden valinnassa käyttää nykyistä helpompia menetelmiä? Tällainen voisi olla esimerkiksi ns. ilmentäjälajien käyttö niiden valinnassa, jos eri eliöyhteisöjen rakenteet olisivat yhteneviä sekä ... -
Ecological niche features override biological traits and taxonomic relatedness as predictors of occupancy and abundance in lake littoral macroinvertebrates
Heino, Jani; Tolonen, Kimmo (Wiley-Blackwell Publishing, Inc., 2018)The degree to which species ecological and biological traits determine their distribution and abundance has intrigued ecologists for a long time, and it has seen a revival in recent years. This topic is important because ...
