Lapset ja aikuiset yhdessä ideaalikoulua luomassa : tutkimus oppilaiden toiveiden ja opetussuunnitelman perusteluonnoksen yhteisistä teemoista

Abstract

Vuonna 2016 voimaan astuvien perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelman perusteiden uudistamisen yhtenä keskeisenä päämääränä oli oppilaiden osallistaminen. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena olikin tuoda esille oppilaiden toiveita koulua kohtaan, peilaten niitä perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelman perusteluonnokseen. Lopulliseksi tutkimustehtäväksi muodostui ideaalikoulun hahmotteleminen oppilaiden toiveiden ja perusteluonnoksen yhteisten piirteiden pohjalta.

Tutkimuksen oppilasaineisto on osa erään koulun opetussuunnitelmatyötä varten kerättyä aineistoa, josta puolet annettiin minulle tutkimuskäyttöön. Tutkimuskohteena olivat erään keskisuomalaisen alakoulun oppilaat, ja graduaineistoni osalta tutkimukseen osallistui yhteensä noin 190 oppilasta, iältään 7–13-vuotiaita. Aineisto kerättiin ensimmäisen luokan oppilailta strukturoidun haastattelun avulla. Toisen, kolmannen, viidennen ja kuudennen luokan oppilaat puolestaan saivat vastata informoituihin kyselyihin. Oppilasaineisto analysoitiin temaattisella analyysilla, jonka jälkeen löydettyjä teemoja verrattiin perusteluonnokseen. Löydettyjen yhteisten piirteiden pohjalta muodostettiin ideaalikoulu, jonka kontekstiksi valittiin oppimisen löytöretki.

Ideaalikoulun pääteemat olivat seuraavat: oppilaat löytöretken keskiössä; yhteisö ja ympäristö löytöretkeilijää innostamassa ja tukemassa; löytöretkeilijöiden hyvinvoinnista huolehtiminen. Tutkimukseni vahvisti käsitystä siitä, että oppilaiden ja aikuisten ajatuksista on löydettävissä yhteistä tarttumapintaa, jonka pohjalta yhteisten toiveiden ja tavoitteiden mukaista koulua voidaan rakentaa.

One of the core purposes of Finland’s curriculum reform 2016 was the empowerment of children. Therefore the purpose of this study was to present the hopes children have for school in the light of a draft for the new National Curriculum for Basic Education. In the end, the study became about outlining an ideal school on the basis of the similarities found in children’s hopes and the draft for the new National Core Curriculum.

Student data of the study was gathered as a part of one school’s curriculum process and half of it was given to me for research purposes. The participants were pupils in one primary school in Middle Finland and they were between ages 7–13, ca 190 altogether. The data was gathered using slightly different methods depending on the age of the children: the first grade students were interviewed with a structured interview whereas the 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th graders answered slightly varied questionnaires. The data was analysed using thematic analysis. The themes found in the student data were then compared to a draft for the new National Core Curriculum. The corresponding themes found were used to build the concept of an ideal school as a context of which an exploratory expedition was chosen.

The core themes of the ideal school were as follows: children as the central focus of the expedition; the community and the surroundings inspiring and supporting the explorer; taking care of the well-being of the explorers. The study verified the ability to find common ground between children’s and adults' thoughts which can be used in the process of school reform.
