We address the question of how to improve the agreement between theoretical nuclear single-particle energies (SPEs) and observations. Empirically, in doubly magic nuclei, the SPEs can be deduced from spectroscopic properties of odd nuclei that have one more or one less neutron or proton. Theoretically, bare SPEs, before being confronted with observations, must be corrected for the effects of the particle vibration coupling (PVC). In the present work, we determine the PVC corrections in a fully self-consistent way.
Then, we adjust the SPEs, with PVC corrections included, to empirical data. In this way, the agreement with observations, on average, improves; nevertheless, large discrepancies still remain. We conclude that the main source of disagreement is still in the underlying mean fields, and not in including or neglecting the PVC corrections.

Rotational properties of nuclei around 254 No investigated using a spectroscopic-quality Skyrme energy density functional
Shi, Yue; Dobaczewski, Jacek; Greenlees, Paul (American Physical Society, 2014)Abstract. Background: Nuclei in the Z≈100 mass region represent the heaviest systems where detailed spectroscopic information is experimentally available. Although microscopic-macroscopic and self-consistent models have ... -
Impact of the surface energy coefficient on the deformation properties of atomic nuclei as predicted by Skyrme energy density functionals
Ryssens, W.; Bender, M.; Bennaceur, Karim; Heenen, P.-H.; Meyer, J. (American Physical Society, 2019)Background: In the framework of nuclear energy density functional (EDF) methods, many nuclear phenomena are related to the deformation of intrinsic states. Their accurate modeling relies on the correct description of the ... -
Properties of nuclei in the nobelium region studied within the covariant, Skyrme, and Gogny energy density functionals
Dobaczewski, Jacek; Afanasjev, A. V.; Bender, M.; Robledo, L. M.; Shi, Yue (Elsevier BV, 2015)We calculate properties of the ground and excited states of nuclei in the nobelium region for proton and neutron numbers of 92≤Z≤104 and 144≤N≤156, respectively. We use three different energy-density-functional (EDF) ... -
Higher-order energy density functionals in nuclear self-consistent theory
Raimondi, Francesco (University of Jyväskylä, 2011)In this thesis consisting of two publications and an overview part, a study of two aspects of energy density functionals has been performed. Firstly, we have linked the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order nuclear ... -
Structure of transactinide nuclei with relativistic energy density functionals
Prassa, Vaia; Nikšic, T.; Vretenar, D. (American Physical Society, 2013)A microscopic theoretical framework based on relativistic energy density functionals (REDFs) is applied to studies of shape evolution, excitation spectra, and decay properties of transactinide nuclei. Axially symmetric ...
