2013Sonification is an interdisciplinary field of research broadly interested in the use of sound to convey information. A fundamental attribute of sound is its ability to evoke emotion, but the display of emotion as a continuous data type has not yet received adequate attention. This paper motivates the use of sonification for display of emotion in affective computing, and as a means of targeting mechanisms of emotion elicitation in music. Environmental sound and music are presented as two possible sources for non-verbal auditory emotion elicitation, each with specific determinants and available features. The review concludes that the auditory-cognitive mechanisms of brain-stem reflex and emotional contagion provide the most advantageous framework for development. A sonification model is presented that implements cues that target these mechanisms. Computationally based strategies for evaluation are presented drawing upon the music emotion recognition literature. Additional aesthetic considerations are discussed that benefit usability and attractiveness of the display.

Development of baculovirus display strategies towards targeting to tumor vasculature
Matilainen, Heli (University of Jyväskylä, 2006)Matilaisen väitöstutkimuksen tavoitteena oli kehittää bakulovirusta käytettäväksi geeniterapiaan syövän hoitoon. Bakulovirus on hyönteisvirus ja siten turvallisempi vaihtoehto kokeellisessa geeniterapiassa tällä hetkellä ... -
Listening Strategies for Musical Brightness Contour : Continuous Ratings by Using Slider Control

A design for neural network model of continuous reading
Hautala, Jarkko; Saarela, Mirka; Loberg, Otto; Kärkkäinen, Tommi (Elsevier, 2024)Cognition and learning are exceedingly modeled as an associative activity of connectionist neural networks. However, only a few such models exist for continuous reading, which involves the delicate coordination of word ... -
Strategies and mechanisms in musical affect self-regulation : A new model
Baltazar, Margarida; Saarikallio, Suvi (Sage Publications Ltd., 2019)This study aimed at investigating the associations between regulation strategies and musical mechanisms involved in musical affect self-regulation. A sample of 571 participants was collected and the data regarding the ...
