deltog 305 elever (149 flickor, 156 pojkar).

The aim of this study was to investigate how the sleeping habits, excersice habits and meal
timing of Finnish school adolescents correlate with each other, and how they correlate with
perceive health. The study also investigated gender differencies in these correlations and
whether or not interesting subgroups exists with regards to health behavior.
Five different schools from five different municipalities took part in the study. The material
was obtained via quastionaires, and the total number of participants was 305 (149 girls and
156 boys). The statistical program SPSS was used in the analysis of the results, and tests used
involved the t-test, Pearson correlation analysis and Regression analysis.
The mean answers on the different questions where quite similar for boys and girls. This was
investigated with the T – test. Only in sleep onset time could a statistically significant
difference be found (p=0,027). The difference translated to about 15 minutes, and girls went
to sleep earlier.
Sleep habits, exercise habits and mealtiminig correlated with each other, but the correlations
where in general weak. When the correlation between these factors and perceived health was
investigated, significant gender differencies where found. Among the boys, only exercise
habits correlated with perceived health and the correlation was weak. Only 4 % of the
perceived health of the boys could be explained by the healh factors investigated. Among the
girls, health behavior correlated more stongly with perceived health. In addition to exercise
habits, also sleep habits and meal timing correlated with perceived health. Roughly 23% of
the girl´s perceived health could be explained by sleep habits, exercise habits and meal
timing.
The group of individuals who reported the poorest perceived health was very heterogen, both
in regards to gender and in regards to health behavior. Therefore, it seems as though the
health parameters investigated in this study has a surprisingly small effect on the perceived
health of school adolescents.
