The purpose of this study was to find out how the basic construction elements of a photograph impact on its narrative content and how the different contexts will be articulated by the persons participating in the entrance exams of Jyväkylä Polytechnic, School of Cultural Studies in 2001, 2002 and 2003.Theories of cultural studies, semiotics, hermeneutics, aesthetics and art are used to explore the ontological foundation of photography. Modernism ' s formal design elements and postmodernism ' s contextual emphasis are both discussed in order to make a compromised view: both the viewing context, the communicational purposes of a photograph and its formal design elements will have an impact on the interpretations of a photograph. The basic formal elements are here classified into three categories: light, time and space. Different concepts of space and its two-dimensional design forms were the most important constructional elements in percepting the visual narrative power of a photograph. Framing, the foreground-background relationships, perceptional lines and diagonals were also named as having impact on the interpretative content. Time was usually interpreted as a cross-cut of linear time and the action in reality was transformed as a situation in a photograph. The reading of a photograph is based on polysemic cultural schemes which in turn will form thematic interpretations. There were common features in arguing the different uses for a photograph: poor technical quality of a photograph will limit and prohibit its use in public communication, it is suitable only for private memoirs. The pragmatically described uses of a photograph also have different values attached to it: in press, advertisement, private memory and art uses the informational value were mentioned. A photograph has also value as witness and seduction. The photograph has also an emotional value in art. All in all the photograph was evaluated as applicable for several different uses if it is strengthened with written or spoken words or other images. The interpretation of a photograph can be described as three focusing layers: focusing in front of the photograph will emphasize the emotional reactions of the interpreter, focusing on the surface of a photograph fixes in its formal qualities and focusing behind the photographic surface will broaden the interpretation to ideological, social and political issues. The interpretational model is finally reduced as a question to which every photograph is capable of distributing an answer: what does this photograph tell about man, human or humanity? Also the interpretation will end in constructing an immaterial photograph between a material photograph and a spectator.en
