As people age, changes in gait parameters are commonly observed, and have been shown to increase the risk of mobility decline and falls. Minimal Toe Clearance (MTC) is the minimum vertical distance between the toe and the ground during the mid-swing phase of the gait cycle. MTC is a key gait parameter indicative of tripping. However, research on MTC is limited to walking on level surfaces, which do not reflect normal daily activities (Al Bochi et al., 2021; Avalos et al., 2024). We aimed to evaluate how MTC and its variation differ among level, uphill, and downhill walking conditions in older adults. This information is important for creating gerontechnology systems to evaluate mobility and fall risk in older adults in real-world environments with diverse challenges.

Gait features in different environments contributing to participation in outdoor activities in old age (GaitAge) : A study protocol for observational cross-sectional study
Rantakokko, Merja; Matikainen-Tervola, Emmi; Aartolahti, Eeva; Sihvonen, Sanna; Chichaeva, Julija; Finni, Taija; Cronin, Neil (JMIR Publications, 2024)Background: The ability to walk is a key issue for independent old age. Optimizing older peoples’ opportunities for an autonomous and active life and reducing health disparities requires a better understanding of how ... -
Spatio-temporal differences in the growth of wild and reared Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) in the Baltic Sea
Peltola, Mikko (2013)Syönnösvaellus ja nopea kasvu ovat olennainen osa Atlantin lohen (Salmo salar L.) ekologiaa, niinpä kasvunopeuden selvittäminen on tärkeä osa kalatutkimusta. Tuottavimmat syönnösalueet tulisi tietää, jotta olisi mahdollista ... -
Statistical inference for eye movement sequences using spatial and spatio-temporal point processes
Ylitalo, Anna-Kaisa (University of Jyväskylä, 2017)Eye tracking is a widely used method for recording eye movements, which are important indicators of ongoing cognitive processes during the viewing of a target stimulus. Despite the variety of applications, the analyses ... -
Bayesian spatio-temporal modeling of areal data
FRET biosensor allows spatio-temporal observation of shear stress-induced polar RhoGDIα activation
Shao, Shuai; Liao, Xiaoling; Xie, Fei; Deng, Sha; Liu, Xue; Ristaniemi, Tapani; Liu, Bo (Nature Publishing Group, 2018)Rho GDP-dissociation inhibitor α (RhoGDIα) is a known negative regulator of the Rho family that shuts off GDP/GTP cycling and cytoplasm/membrane translocation to regulate cell migration. However, to our knowledge, no ...
