Careers can be described as organisational structures and processes as well as individual career paths impacted by societal development. University organisations have their own goals and motivations in developing their academic career structures, which are impacted by societal expectations. Therefore, academic professionals must navigate those structures and negotiate between their autonomous position at universities and university management who steers and controls their work. In this chapter, the perspectives of the university organisation and the academic profession are addressed in developing tenure tracks at universities. After setting the stage for this complex research theme, the content of this book will be described at the end of this chapter.
