Integrative taxonomy resolves species identities within the Macrobiotus pallarii complex (Eutardigrada: Macrobiotidae)
Stec, Daniel; Vecchi, Matteo; Dudziak, Magdalena; Bartels, Paul J.; Calhim, Sara; Michalczyk, Łukasz (Biomed Central, 2021)The taxonomy of many groups of meiofauna is challenging due to their low number of diagnostic morphological characters and their small body size. Therefore, with the advent of molecular techniques that provide a new source ... -
Two new species of Inocybe from Mediterranean Cistaceae heathlands
Fachada, Vasco; Bandini, Ditte; Beja-Pereira, Albano (Taylor & Francis, 2024)This study explored a heathland region in Portugal, and through morphology, biogeography, and multilocus phylogeny, two new species of Inocybaceae are described. The first species, Inocybe iberilepora, belongs to “I. ... -
Human experts vs. machines in taxa recognition
Ärje, Johanna; Raitoharju, Jenni; Iosifidis, Alexandros; Tirronen, Ville; Meissner, Kristian; Gabbouj, Moncef; Kiranyaz, Serkan; Kärkkäinen, Salme (Elsevier, 2020)The step of expert taxa recognition currently slows down the response time of many bioassessments. Shifting to quicker and cheaper state-of-the-art machine learning approaches is still met with expert scepticism towards ... -
Macrobiotus naginae sp. nov., a New Xerophilous Tardigrade Species from Rokua Sand Dunes (Finland)
Vecchi, Matteo; Stec, Daniel; Vuori, Tommi; Ryndov, Serge; Chartrain, Justine; Calhim, Sara (Academia Sinica, 2022)Animals that colonize soil show specific adaptations to soil. Compared to closely related species living on the surface, the limbs of soil-dwelling animals are often shortened, reduced, or absent to allow a less restricted ...
