As the aim of this study was to synthesize optically active binary and ternary thiocyanates of silver, which could be utilized in the field of laser technology, a concise literary review of the nonlinear optical materials is presented. The field of nonlinear optics is vast, and the review is mainly restricted to the common features and practical applications of the nonlinear optical materials, while the theory of nonlinear optics is presented only superficially. The review of the literature introduces the thiocyanate ion and its various ways of coordination. Finally, the selected structures of various thiocyanates of silver are reviewed and the substructures formed by silver and sulfur are discussed. In the experimental part eight crystal structures of binary and ternary thiocyanates of silver, two of them having been published quite recently by another research group, are reported. Synthesis and characterization of the compounds are discussed. The compounds reported are as follows: K[Ag(SCN)2], K2[Ag(SCN)3], K3[Ag(fCN)4], Ca[Ag2(SCN)4]· 2H2O, CaCs2[Ag2(SCN)6]· 2H2O, Cs[AgZn(NCS)4], Cs2[AgZn(SCN)5] and Cs[Ag4Zn2(SCN)9].

Solid phase extraction materials as a key for improving the accuracy of silver nanoparticle characterization with single-particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in natural waters through dissolved silver removal
Kinnunen, Virva; Perämäki, Siiri; Matilainen, Rose (Elsevier, 2022)The accurate characterization of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in environmental samples is crucial for understanding the potential impact of these materials on the environment and human health. Single-particle inductively ... -
Application of 3D printed scavengers for improving the accuracy of single-particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analyses of silver nanoparticles by dissolved silver removal
Kinnunen, Virva; Frimodig, Janne; Perämäki, Siiri; Matilainen, Rose (Elsevier, 2023)The determination of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) with single-particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry can be severely interfered with coexisting dissolved silver causing high background signals, which can ... -
Toxicity of silver nanoparticles to Lumbriculus variegatus is a function of dissolved silver and promoted by low sediment pH
Rajala, Juho; Vehniäinen, Eeva-Riikka; Väisänen, Ari; Kukkonen, Jussi (Wiley, 2018)Toxicity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to benthic organisms is a major concern. The use of AgNPs in industry and consumer products leads to increasing release of AgNPs into the aquatic environment—sediments being the ... -
Thiourea Based Tritopic Halogen Bonding Acceptors
Happonen, Lauri; Mattila, Milla; Peshev, Ivan; Lehikoinen, Arttu; Valkonen, Arto (Wiley-VCH Verlag, 2023)Series of thiourea based tritopic receptor molecules were synthesized to be used as building blocks for halogen-bonded assemblies. Here 16 new receptor molecules were synthesized from two different 2,4,6-trialkyl-1,3,5-t ... -
