We investigate the production of primordial black holes (PBHs) in a mixed inflaton-curvaton scenario with a quadratic curvaton potential, assuming the curvaton is in de Sitter equilibrium during inflation with 〈χ〉 = 0. In this setup, the curvature perturbation sourced by the curvaton is strongly non-Gaussian, containing no leading Gaussian term. We show that for m2/H2 ≳ 0.3, the curvaton contribution to the spectrum of primordial perturbations on CMB scales can be kept negligible but on small scales the curvaton can source PBHs. In particular, PBHs in the asteroid mass range 10-16M⊙ ≲ M ≲ 10-10M⊙ with an abundance reaching FPBH = 1 can be produced when the inflationary Hubble scale H ≳ 1012 GeV and the curvaton decay occurs in the window from slightly before the electroweak transition to around the QCD transition.

Shining primordial black holes
Hertzberg, Mark P.; Nurmi, Sami; Schiappacasse, Enrico D.; Yanagida, Tsutomu T. (American Physical Society, 2021)We study the well-motivated mixed dark matter (DM) scenario composed of a dominant thermal WIMP, highlighting the case of SU(2)L triplet fermion “winos,” with a small fraction of primordial black holes (PBHs). After the ... -
Cosmological constraints on primordial black holes
Cangialosi, Antonino (2019)Primordial Black Holes (PBH) may have formed from collapse of high-density primordial fluctuations in the early Universe. Interest for PBH has been stirred anew by the LIGO detection of gravitational waves from massive ... -
Can primordial black holes as all dark matter explain fast radio bursts?
Kainulainen, Kimmo; Nurmi, Sami; Schiappacasse, Enrico D.; Yanagida, Tsutomu T. (American Physical Society (APS), 2021)Primordial black holes (PBHs) are one of the most interesting nonparticle dark matter (DM) candidates. They may explain all the DM content in the Universe in the mass regime from about 10−14 M⊙ to 10−11 M⊙. We study PBHs ... -
Radio signatures from encounters between neutron stars and QCD-axion minihalos around primordial black holes
Nurmi, Sami; Schiappacasse, Enrico D.; Yanagida, Tsutomu T. (IOP Publishing, 2021)Probing the QCD axion dark matter (DM) hypothesis is extremely challenging as the axion interacts very weakly with Standard Model particles. We propose a new avenue to test the QCD axion DM via transient radio signatures ... -
Implications for dark matter direct detection in the presence of LIGO-motivated primordial black holes
Hertzberg, Mark P.; Schiappacasse, Enrico D.; Yanagida, Tsutomu T. (Elsevier, 2020)We discuss formation of dark matter (DM) mini-halos around primordial black holes (PBHs) and its implication on DM direct detection experiments, including axion searches. Motivated by LIGO observations, we consider fDM≃0.01 ...
