Overfishing drives population decline, which in turn drives loss of genetic diversity. Many studies provide evidence of declines in genetic diversity; however, controversy exists within the literature, as some studies show evidence of no change in genetic diversity despite decades of overharvesting. The apparent discrepancy in the literature should therefore be examined to understand what biological and ecological processes are driving the differences in results. Here, we assess how different factors contribute to fisheries-induced susceptibility to declines in genetic diversity by first focusing on the different roles of genetic markers. Second, we assess how habitat type and conditions contribute to loss of genetic diversity. Third, we assess how life history and physiology affects catchability and loss of genetic diversity. Finally, we discuss how coinciding abiotic and biotic factors influence the intensity of genetic loss. We find a multitude of these factors could be interacting to influence how results are perceived and how intense the loss of genetic diversity can be. Future studies should carefully consider the methodology of genetic analysis used, as well as considerations of life history and ecology of the target species.

Size‐selective harvesting drives genomic shifts in a harvested population
Sadler, Daniel E.; Sävilammi, Tiina; van Dijk, Stephan N.; Watts, Phillip C.; Uusi‐Heikkilä, Silva (Wiley, 2024)Overfishing not only drastically reduces the number of fish in an exploited population but is also often selective for body size by removing the largest individuals from a population. Here, we study experimentally the ... -
Comparing RADseq and microsatellites for estimating genetic diversity and relatedness : Implications for brown trout conservation
Lemopoulos, Alexandre; Prokkola, Jenni M.; Uusi-Heikkilä, Silva; Vasemägi, Anti; Huusko, Ari; Hyvärinen, Pekka; Koljonen, Marja-Liisa; Koskiniemi, Jarmo; Vainikka, Anssi (John Wiley & Sons Ltd., 2019)The conservation and management of endangered species requires information on their genetic diversity, relatedness and population structure. The main genetic markers applied for these questions are microsatellites and ... -
Fisheries-induced life-history changes recover in experimentally harvested fish populations
van Dijk, Stephan N.; Sadler, Daniel E.; Watts, Phillip C.; Uusi-Heikkilä, Silva (Royal Society, 2024)Overfishing is one of the greatest threats to fish populations. Size-selective harvesting favours faster juvenile growth, younger maturation, small adult body size and low reproductive output. Such changes might be slow ... -
Implications of fisheries‐induced evolution for population recovery : Refocusing the science and refining its communication
Hutchings, Jeffrey A.; Kuparinen, Anna (John Wiley & Sons, 2020)The argument that sufficiently high fishing mortality (selective or not) can effect genetic change in fished populations has gained considerable traction since the late 1970s. The intervening decades have provided compelling ... -
