The concept of planetary well-being, which stresses the persistence of lineages in ecosystems, is intimately linked to species extinction risk. Avoiding extinctions is a moral issue, as wiping out the outcomes of eons of evolutionary history and their future potential is clearly unconscionable. The concept of planetary well-being is also systemic: It is understood that species, as integral parts of ecosystems, are vital for the well-being of all systems on Earth. Yet, despite international agreements to protect biodiversity, global biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation has continued unimpeded over the past decades. We review the role of goals and targets in the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, stressing the importance of accountability. We suggest that extinction risk assessments of the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List, and associated country-level Red List Indices, provide valuable tools for guiding conservation action and for monitoring the state of planetary well-being.

Verifying the predicted risk of extinction based on ecological characteristics
Komonen, Atte; Kotiaho, Janne S. (John Wiley & Sons, 2021)Red List status of species should reflect species extinction risk. Because data are limited and species response has a time lag, species may be threatened by extinction even if they are not Red‐Listed. The ability to predict ... -
A landscape approach to planetary well-being
Duflot, Rémi; Keskinen, Kirsi E.; Eyvindson, Kyle; Raatikainen, Kaisa J. (Routledge, 2024)“Landscape” refers to a perceivable spatial level shaped by socio-ecological interactions and represents the systems where people live. Human societies have globally transformed landscapes to meet their needs, e.g., nutrition ... -
Ontological differences and the pursuit of planetary well-being
Raippalinna, Liia-Maria; Hämeenaho, Pilvi; Salmi, Jelena (Routledge, 2024)This chapter emphasizes the importance of ontological dialogue and methodological choices to the conceptual development and practical enactment of planetary well-being. Starting from the premise that cultural practices, ... -

(Routledge, 2024)Healthy ecosystems support the well-being of all organisms on Earth. Yet, the overexploitation of natural resources for human needs and profit has resulted in widespread ecosystem degradation, loss of biodiversity, and ... -
Planetary well-being : Ontology and ethics
Kortetmäki, Teea; Puurtinen, Mikael; Salo, Miikka; Cortés-Capano, Gonzalo; Karkulehto, Sanna; Kotiaho, Janne S. (Routledge, 2024)This chapter elaborates the ontological and ethical underpinnings and implications of the concept of planetary well-being. We illustrate how planetary well-being can contribute conceptually to transformative thinking and ...
