Information sources behind cryptocurrency investments

Abstract

Kasvanut kiinnostus kryptovaluutoihin vuoden 2017 kryptovaluuttamarkkinoiden laajojen hinnannousujen myötä on tuonut keskusteluun huolia kryptovaluuttamarkkinoiden volatiliteetistä ja riskeistä. Uudentyyppisenä sijoituskohteena kryptovaluuttoja on tutkittu erityisesti niiden teknisen toiminnallisuuden sekä niihin sijoittavien motivaatioiden näkökulmista. Aiemman tutkimuksen tarkastelun perusteella löydettiin katvealue kryptovaluuttasijoittajien sijoitusten tukena käyttämien tietolähteiden osalta. Tämän pro-gradu tutkielman tavoitteena on tuottaa tietoa siitä, millaisia tietolähteitä kryptovaluuttasijoittajat käyttävät sijoitustensa tukena, ja muuttuuko näiden lähteiden käyttö sijoittajan ensimmäisen ja viimeisimmän sijoituskerran välillä. Tutkielman teoriaosa on toteutettu kirjallisuuskatsauksena, ja empiirinen osa verkkokyselyn avulla. Tutkielman tulokset osoittavat kryptovaluuttasijoittajien käyttävän useita erilaisia tietolähteitä sijoituksensa tukena. Vaikkakin ensimmäisestä kryptovaluutasta johon sijoittaja päättää sijoittaa kuullaan yleisimmin ystäviltä, perheenjäseniltä tai sosiaalisesta mediasta, käyttävät useimmat sijoittajat näiden lisäksi muitakin tietolähteitä. Sijoittajien käyttämät lähteet eivät muuttuneet merkittävästi ensimmäisen ja viimeisen sijoituksen välillä, sijoittajien käyttämien tietolähteiden määrä pieneni viimeisimmällä sijoituskerralla ensimmäiseen verrattuna. Sijoittajat olivat myös varmempia sijoituksensa tueksi tekemästään taustatyöstä viimeisimmällä sijoituskerralla ensimmäiseen kertaan verrattuna. Tutkielma tarjoaa alustavaa näyttöä niistä tietolähteistä, joita kryptovaluuttasijoittajat käyttävät sijoitustensa tukena. Tästä tiedosta voi olla hyötyä sijoittajalle, joka haluaa tehdä parempaa taustatyötä kryptovaluuttasijoituksensa tueksi.

The growing interest in the cryptocurrency markets since the first market wide price increases in 2017 has brought along it a lot of discussion about the volatility and risks involved in investing in cryptocurrencies. As a new form of investing, the research around cryptocurrencies has provided insights on both the technical details of cryptocurrencies, as well as the motivations of the people investing in them. Among the research, a research gap was identified on the sources used by cryptocurrency investors to research the cryptocurrencies they are interested in investing into. This master’s thesis goal is to provide insights on what type of sources cryptocurrency investors are using in their pre-investment research, and if it changes after their first cryptocurrency investment. The theoretical portion of the study was conducted as a literature review, and empirical portion as an online survey. The results of the survey show that cryptocurrency investors use multiple sources on their pre-investment research. While most investors first found about the first cryptocurrency they eventually invested in from their friends, family or social media, additional sources were used to gain deeper knowledge on the investment. The sources used in their latest investment did not change drastically, however, the amount of sources used decreased compared to their first investment. The investors were also more confident in their pre-investment research on their latest investment compared to their first. The study provides preliminary evidence on the sources used by cryptocurrency investors. This information can be useful for investors wanting to gather knowledge on the cryptocurrency they are planning to invest in.
