To improve sustainability and to implement the principles of circular economy in aquaculture, we tested the possibility to boost the capture of nitrate by two green microalgal species from recirculating aquaculture system's (RAS) wastewater by supplementing air with carbon dioxide stripped from a RAS. Carbon dioxide addition increased cell densities of Monoraphidium griffithii and Haematococcus pluvialis in photobioreactors during 9-day growing periods. However, growth rates and nitrate uptake rates were only improved for M. griffithii. Addition of CO2 decreased pH of the medium with M. griffithii which likely also affected positively on algal growth and nutrient uptake. These laboratory scale experiments suggest that microalgal cultivation to produce valuable biomass could be connected to a RAS to decrease nitrate and CO2 emissions from aquaculture.

Screening of microalgae and LED grow light spectra for effective removal of dissolved nutrients from cold-water recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) wastewater
Stevčić, Čedomir; Pulkkinen, Katja; Pirhonen, Juhani (Elsevier BV, 2019)Popularity of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) is increasing. Because of the high water recirculation rate, dissolved nutrients originating from fish feed are concentrated enough in RAS wastewater (WW) to enable ... -
Efficiency of Daphnia magna in removal of green microalgae cultivated in Nordic recirculating aquaculture system wastewater
Stevčić, Čedomir; Pulkkinen, Katja; Pirhonen, Juhani (Elsevier, 2020)The increase of global aquaculture production has boosted the development of recirculating aquaculture systems not only because they reduce water use but also provide opportunities for waste management and the use of ... -
Effects of CO2 concentration and light intensity on the growth and biochemical composition of Chlorella vulgaris cultured in recirculating aquaculture system’s effluent
Kannangara, Ruchira (2024)Microalgae cultivation has gained more attention recently due to the produced high-value biomass, which has many useful applications. The effluents from recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) typically contain a high ... -
Enhanced nitrogen removal of low carbon wastewater in denitrification bioreactors by utilizing industrial waste toward circular economy
Kiani, Sepideh; Kujala, Katharina; Pulkkinen, Jani; Aalto, Sanni L.; Suurnäkki, Suvi; Kiuru, Tapio; Tiirola, Marja; Kløve, Bjørn; Ronkanen, Anna-Kaisa (Elsevier, 2020)Aquaculture needs practical solutions for nutrient removal to achieve sustainable fish production. Passive denitrifying bioreactors may provide an ecological, low-cost and low-maintenance approach for wastewater nitrogen ... -
Comparison of three unionid mussel species in removing green microalgae grown in recirculating aquaculture system effluent
Julkunen, Ville; Stevčić, Čedomir; Pirhonen, Juhani; Pulkkinen, Katja (Springer Nature, 2024)Global increase in aquaculture production has created a need to reduce its environmental impacts. Nutrients could be recycled especially at land-based recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) by cultivating green microalgae ...
