To determine the drivers of phytoplankton biomass, we collected standardized morphometric, physical, and biological data in 230 lakes across the Mediterranean, Continental, and Boreal climatic zones of the European continent. Multilinear regression models tested on this snapshot of mostly eutrophic lakes (median total phosphorus [TP] = 0.06 and total nitrogen [TN] = 0.7 mg L−1), and its subsets (2 depth types and 3 climatic zones), show that light climate and stratification strength were the most significant explanatory variables for chlorophyll a (Chl a) variance. TN was a significant predictor for phytoplankton biomass for shallow and continental lakes, while TP never appeared as an explanatory variable, suggesting that under high TP, light, which partially controls stratification strength, becomes limiting for phytoplankton development. Mediterranean lakes were the warmest yet most weakly stratified and had significantly less Chl a than Boreal lakes, where the temperature anomaly from the long-term average, during a summer heatwave was the highest (+4°C) and showed a significant, exponential relationship with stratification strength. This European survey represents a summer snapshot of phytoplankton biomass and its drivers, and lends support that light and stratification metrics, which are both affected by climate change, are better predictors for phytoplankton biomass in nutrient-rich lakes than nutrient concentrations and surface temperature.

Increasing air temperature relative to water temperature makes the mixed layer shallower, reducing phytoplankton biomass in a stratified lake
Ahonen, Salla A.; Seppälä, Jukka; Karjalainen, Juha S.; Kuha, Jonna; Vähätalo, Anssi V. (Wiley-Blackwell, 2023)The depth of the mixed layer is a major determinant of nutrient and light availability for phytoplankton in stratified waterbodies. Ongoing climate change influences surface waters through meteorological forcing, which ... -

Response of European whitefish embryos to thermal conditions diverges between peri-alpine populations
Stewart, Taylor R.; Brun, Charles; Goulon, Chloé; Baer, Jan; Karjalainen, Juha; Guillard, Jean; Lasne, Emilien (EDP Sciences, 2024)Peri-alpine lakes are vulnerable to climate warming. Water temperature in these lakes has increased and will likely continue in the coming decades, questioning the fate of inhabiting aquatic populations. Understanding how ... -
Temperature, phosphorus and species composition will all influence phytoplankton production and content of polyunsaturated fatty acids
Calderini, Marco L.; Pääkkönen, Salli; Salmi, Pauliina; Peltomaa, Elina; Taipale, Sami J. (Oxford University Press (OUP), 2023)Temperature increases driven by climate change are expected to decrease the availability of polyunsaturated fatty acids in lakes worldwide. Nevertheless, a comprehensive understanding of the joint effects of lake trophic ... -
The influence of lipid content and taxonomic affiliation on methane and carbon dioxide production from phytoplankton biomass in lake sediment
Hiltunen, Minna; Nykänen, Hannu; Syväranta, Jari (John Wiley & Sons, 2021)The greenhouse gases methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are end products of microbial anaerobic degradation of organic matter (OM) in lake sediments. Although previous research has shown that phytoplankton lipid content ...
