There is a negative correlation between the quality and quantity of memory representations in visual working memory, and this negative correlation is seen as a trade-off between quantity and quality. However, it is unclear whether this trade-off is entirely stimulus-driven or can be controlled voluntarily by individuals according to task demands, which has led to a debate on the mechanism of memory resource allocation. This paper systematically reviews the development of research on whether the trade-off between quantity and quality is subject to individual voluntary control, and point out this voluntary control is influenced by the exposure duration and working memory capacity, and some suggestions for future research are proposed.

内部注意在维度层面对视觉工作记忆的影响
Zhou, Zifang; Liu, Xinyang; Guo, Lijing; He, Guanghao; Ye, Chaoxiong (Hans Publishers, 2021)Visual working memory is a memory system with limited capacity, thus internal attention plays a crucial role in selecting, controlling, and maintaining its stored content. Retro-cues are an important tool to study the ... -
Dimension-based retro-cue benefit in working memory does not require unfocused dimension removal
Liu, Ruyi; Guo, Lijing; Lin, Xiaoshu; Nie, Dan; Astikainen, Piia; Ye, Chaoxiong (Frontiers Media SA, 2024)Introduction: Within the maintenance phase of visual working memory (VWM), previous researchers presented retro-cues orienting to a probed dimension across all multidimension stimuli and found a robust dimension-based ... -
The bilateral field advantage effect in memory precision
Zhang, Yin; Ye, Chaoxiong; Roberson, Debi; Zhao, Guang; Xue, Chengbo; Liu, Qiang (Sage Publications Ltd., 2018)Previous research has demonstrated that visual working memory performance is better when visual items are allocated in both left and right visual fields than within only one hemifield. This phenomenon is called the bilateral ... -
The differential impact of face distractors on visual working memory across encoding and delay stages
Ye, Chaoxiong; Xu, Qianru; Pan, Zhihu; Nie, Qi-Yang; Liu, Qiang (Springer Nature, 2024)External distractions often occur when information must be retained in visual working memory (VWM)—a crucial element in cognitive processing and everyday activities. However, the distraction effects can differ if they occur ... -
Encoding specificity instead of online integration of real-world spatial regularities for objects in working memory
Liu, Xinyang; Liu, Ruyi; Guo, Lijing; Astikainen, Piia; Ye, Chaoxiong (Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), 2022)Most objects show high degrees of spatial regularity (e.g. beach umbrellas appear above, not under, beach chairs). The spatial regularities of real-world objects benefit visual working memory (VWM), but the mechanisms ...
