A big question in behavioural ecology is what drives diversity of colour signals. The dataset covers the testing of the context-dependent predator selection on prey coloration. In the first experiment, detectability of artificial visual stimuli to blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus) was tested by manipulating stimulus luminance and chromatic context of the background. In the second experiment, the effect of two light environments on the survival of aposematic, colour polymorphic wood tiger moth (Arctia plantaginis) was tested. For detailed description of the material, methods, and results of the study, see the article.

Context-dependent coloration of prey and predator decision making in contrasting light environments
Nokelainen, Ossi; de Moraes Rezende, Francisko; Valkonen, Janne K.; Mappes, Johanna (Oxford University Press (OUP), 2022)A big question in behavioral ecology is what drives diversity of color signals. One possible explanation is that environmental conditions, such as light environment, may alter visual signaling of prey, which could affect ... -
Exploring polymorphism in a palatable prey : predation risk and frequency dependence in relation to distinct levels of conspicuousness
Poloni, Riccardo; Dhennin, Marina; Mappes, Johanna; Joron, Mathieu; Nokelainen, Ossi (Oxford University Press, 2024)Camouflage and warning signals are different antipredator strategies, which offer an excellent opportunity to study the evolutionary forces acting on prey appearance. Edible prey often escape detection via camouflage, which ... -
Experiments on defensive mimicry : linkages between predator behaviour and qualities of the prey
Ihalainen, Eira (University of Jyväskylä, 2006)Myrkylliset tai pahanmakuiset lajit voivat puolustautua saalistajia vastaan mainostamalla syömäkelvottomuuttaan näkyvin varoitussignaalein kuten värein. Saalistajien on tavallisesti opittava kokeilemalla välttämään pahoja ... -
Social information use about novel aposematic prey is not influenced by a predator's previous experience with toxins
Hämäläinen, Liisa; Mappes, Johanna; Rowland, Hannah M.; Thorogood, Rose (Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Ltd., 2019)Aposematism is an effective antipredator strategy. However, the initial evolution and maintenance of aposematism are paradoxical because conspicuous prey are vulnerable to attack by naïve predators. Consequently, the ... -
Olfactory cues and the value of information : Voles interpret cues differently based on recent predator encounters
Bleicher, Sonny S.; Ylönen, Hannu; Käpylä, Teemu; Haapakoski, Marko (Springer, 2018)Prey strategically respond to the risk of predation by varying their behavior while balancing the tradeoffs of food and safety. We present here an experiment that tests the way the same indirect cues of predation risk are ...
