The population is aging in Finland as well as globally and at the same time the care industry is losing traction and the shortage of manpower is growing. Meanwhile virtual reality and augmented reality technologies are continuing their conquest of different industries. It is apparent that the situation demands solutions if we want to maintain the quality of care for the elderly and secure their wellbeing in the future. The purpose of the thesis is to survey, with the methods of an integrative literature review, what virtual reality and augmented reality are as technologies, how they can be utilized in the context of eldercare, as well as what kinds of benefits or utility they bring to the field. The bachelor’s thesis concludes that even though there are some existing challenges, VR- and AR-technologies can provide valuable tools for solving eldercare challenges now and in the future. The objective of the thesis is to provide the reader with an understanding of what VR- and AR-technologies are, how can they be uti-lized in the context of eldercare as well as specify what kinds of benefits and challenges does the utilization of said technologies bring about.
