Lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) is a common and economically significant wild berry native to Finland. Its pollination ecology is not well-known, but it is believed that bumblebees (Bombus spp.) are among its most effective pollinators. The aim of this study was to determine which insect pollinators provide lingonberry the largest yields of berries and seeds in forest ecosystem in Central Finland. Additionally, the types and relative proportions of visiting insects were surveyed. A field experiment was conducted in the summer of 2019, in which the visitors of lingonberry flowers were observed in eight boreal forest sites. Ripe berries were collected from the study plots and their seeds were counted. The yields of berries and seeds were compared among the three treatments in each of the forests: 1) open pollination, 2) bee pollination and 3) unpollinated control. Half of the forests had beehives to determine whether the western honeybee (Apis mellifera) is an efficient pollinator for lingonberry. The most commonly observed native flower visitors were mining bees from the genus Andrena. The average yields of berries and seeds were larger in plots of open pollination than in plots of bee pollination, but the difference was not statistically significant. Therefore, the effect of bumblebees was smaller than expected. The beehives had no significant effect either, although the average yields of berries and seeds were larger in the forests with beehives. The effect of western honeybee as a pollinator of lingonberry thus remains unclear. This study provided information about the pollination ecology of lingonberry in Central Finland and indicated that it does not necessarily have a single most efficient pollinator.en
